i have been commissioned to make a quilt by a dream client. my very first!

she loves mid-century modern design, so it's been really wonderful to browse vintage fabrics. holy cow are they ever expensive! $155 a meter for authentic textiles? woah. and she didn't even blink...

different reality than my current one! but i'm so excited :)

my question though is about quilting with velvet. i was thinking i could back it in velvet maybe.

has anyone done this? i've read that working with it can be tricky if it starts to fray, and it doesn't really like to stay still.

thoughts? stories? tips?

it will go walkies on you--it has a very promenent nap can ruin your pattern or be part of your design---great in crazy patch work[smallish pieces] it is very heavy too heavy i would suggest for a whole quilt back--nothing can beat its luxury look

I'm thinking it would be too heavy and a nightmare to quilt, but hey, I bet it can me done!

I have used it alot in my Crazy Quilts, but the pieces were much smaller, and I always surrounded it by the lighter weight satins and silks so the edges were covered by them without having to turn under the velvet because of the bulk, wonder if you could use the quilt as you go method?

Perhaps sashings and/or borders of velvet would add interest and texture without adding a lot of weight.

Do note that when you sew on velvet... and you make a mistake.. the holes from the orginal stitching never go away... and you can't really press velvet as it can permanently crush the nap/pile.
