I'm using varigated thread for the first time, on a first time applique project. I'm in love with the look. It's just gorgeous. But the thread is fraying in the needle and and breaking. What can I do to stop this? It is rayon thread.

You might have to try a needle made for metallic threads. I think their eye is a bit larger. I've had to do that to prevent fraying.

I would try changing the needle to maybe a topstitching needle to see if that would help.

Machine or hand applique?

Machine: try changing needle size and reducing your top tension a smidge.

Hand: slide needle down thread a bit after every 2 or 3 stitches.

sounds like your needle is not the correct size for the thread- if the needle is not the correct size your threads will fray from rubbing on the eye itself and also on the fabric from the holes being too small. switch to a larger needle and your problem should go away

I love using verigated thread and have never had a problem but I do use cotton. I have made placemats, potholders and dishtowel tops using a SW fabric on one side and a nice black on the other. I use the verigated thread on the black side. It gives you a very elegant look especially on the placemats. You then have the SW look for everyday and the dressy black for special occasions.

Try a larger needle and slowing your stitching speed. I use a pretty big topstitch needle (14) if I am having thread issues

Yep, beautiful look but it does tend to be problematic in the machine. As someone else said try a different needle and you will need to anchor your thread ends. After sewing, I tie the bottom and top thread ends in a knot and bring them to the back or bury them in the quilt sandwich.

An embroidery, topstitch or metallic needle may work better, they all have larger eyes :D:D:D
