Has anyone made a quilt with the new realistic looking Vegetable fabrics? I think they are so pretty but can't figure out what to do with them with the big scale photo type prints and bright colors. I need some ideas.

redquilter 06-16-2010 04:36 PM

I made a couple of canning jar quilts with them.

Not yet, but sure love those canning jar quilts. So cute.

Pam 06-16-2010 05:44 PM

What about a OBW? I have yet to make one, but I sure like them and I think the riot of color would be great!

littlehud 06-16-2010 06:32 PM

I have some set aside for a canning quilt, but I'm drawn to the suggestion of a OBW. I may try that instead.

How about shopping bags?

That is a cute idea! It staggers my mind, the amount of creativity of the people in this group.

i talked to my grandma last night. She said she bought some "real looking" vegetable fabric... i wonder if this is what she meant....
shes using them on the jar lids for her canning this summer

bearisgray 06-17-2010 06:43 AM

Could just cut out big squares of them to "show off" each piece.

OBW is a One Block Wonder :D

I like the idea of canning jar quilts, kitchen wall hangings, appliance covers too.

jean knapp 06-17-2010 03:45 PM

Ok, Mom, my sister and I, all sewers, Have looked up OBW online and in our books and we can't find what this is.

gollytwo 06-17-2010 04:17 PM

am making a 9-patch using fruits and vegetables with a very large center square
It'll be called EAT YOUR BROCCOLI

Another one with candies, potato chips, big Macs etc. I haven't got a name in mind yet.

I really like all the other suggestions you've gotten too.

Call me dumb, but even after looking at these (very pretty, BTW), I'm still not sure what a one block wonder is. Is it a quilt all of the same block? One piece of fabric? I need a definition I guess.

I gave mine to my sis in law and she is making aprons with them

OBW sounds like that would be neat.

Honey 06-18-2010 05:09 AM

I have several and am going to make a quilted tablecloth out of them. I really love the canning jar quilt!

RJR is coming out with still more of their Farmer's Market fruit and vegetable fabrics. Completely new: pomegranates and cabbage. You can see them all on RJR's site here:

I made a valance of one row of fruit jars with a picture window frame around it. So it looks like a shelf with fruit jars on it.I found some 4"x8" realistic looking fabric on e-bay. so my valance has 12 different jars on it. also bought some fabric with printed jars on it to make place mats. I haven't made them yet.I think this fabric is really fun.

lawsonmugs 06-18-2010 05:37 AM

This is such a cute jar pattern. different than everything else I've seen. will you tell me where you got the pattern for the jars. your quilt is just so cute.

The jar pattern is a applique pattern that I did on my embroidery machine. I bought the pattern at oregonpatchworks embroidery mall. Just put in "jar applique" in the search and you should be able to find it.

lawsonmugs 06-18-2010 05:45 AM

thanks so much.

Look up "one block wonders" and you will get instructions.

My sister moved to Florida, and misses blueberry time here in Michigan,so I made her pillowcases with the blue berry one,My family loves the 20 minute pillowcases and they all ask for them with most of my stash, really how many do you need?

AtHomeSewing 06-18-2010 06:59 AM

I'm using red chile pepper fabric along with some of the realistic fruits: blueberries, lemons, bananas mixed in with lots of bright batiks for a kaleidoscope quilt I'm working on right now. I hope it will all work together.
