Velveteen quilts
Has anyone made a quilt out of velveteen?? If so what pattern is best for that type of material and can it be washed?? I got some from a neighbor and not sure what to do with it!! Thanks

Why not try doing a crazy quilt and use it along with satin pieces and embellishments?

I haven't made a quilt out of velveteen, but have used it to sew quite a bit of clothing. Most velveteen is cotton and yes, it can be washed. Because of its nap, it has a tendency to "crawl" (layers shift) as you sew, so using a walking foot is almost a necessity. I agree that a crazy quilt is a good idea; otherwise a very simple pattern, because piecing velveteen would be a whole different scenario than regular quilting cottons.

Exactly! Crazy Quilt is the way to go. The quilt will be spectacular!

Crazy Quilt is the traditional way to make a velvet or velvetine quilt, but any pattern that didn't use points would be fine. Because of the thickness of the nap I think points would be very hard to do. If you have jewel tones in your pieces you could get some beautiful stained window effects because of the way the light is affected by the nap. You might want to combine it with poly satin for more effect. Poly satin is so very washable.

not yet, but due to its stretchiness i'm not sure i'd be up for that challenge...
have considered using it for a backing, though... |
My Mother did a crazy quilt as a gift to my Grandmother when I was a child. I remember thinking it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. The velveteen looked like jewels.

For sure "Crazy Quilt". I am saving all my velveteen, velvet, satins, lace and ribbons for a crazy quilt: I love to do hand emb. and looking at all the different stitches I can put into it: Way to go: Happy Crazy Quilting

Thank you for your suggestions. This should be interesting because I have never done a crazy quilt. I can't wait to get started. Thanks again:)
