walking foot problems

I inherited my mother's Bernina 830 record. She had a walking foot (Bernina) that has instruction on attaching, but I still can not get the thing to fit tight. Everytime I test it the needle hits the foot. Is there another attachment that goes on before this one or am I just attaching it incorrectly? Thanks AnnieJS

Are you sure your needle is in the center position? That is the only way I can think that the needle would be hitting the foot.

Do you have the right walking foot for that machine? Unlike many things, Bernina's walking foots do not interchange. Also, there is a hook thingie (I know there is a name for it) That hooks onto the screw that holds the needle. Do you have that on right?

I have a vintage Bernina 830 Record and walking foot. After much frustration, I finally realized that I needed to use the knee lift to raise the presser foot a little more to give enough clearance to attach the walking foot. It still takes some maneuvering to angle the walking foot, slip it on the needle bar and place the hook around the needle bar screw. Without the knee lift I couldn't get the walking foot on the machine no matter what I tried.
