Why?

A blanket is something that covers something -

I agree!! It is offensive to me when I give someone a quilt and they continue to call it a blanket - even after I explain it is a "quilt"! :(

Some people call tied quilts comforters...

If it's quilted it's a quilt. If it's not quilted it's not a quilt. Size makes no difference.

So if it's pieced and tied, but not quilted, it's still a quilt? But if it's pieced and backed with fleece, with no 3rd layer, whether it's quilted or tied, it's not a quilt? LOL, This is too confusing for me. IMHO, if it's pieced, quilted, tied, has 2, 3 or 4 layers, it's a quilt. If it's one layer and fuzzy, it's a blanket. If it's one layer, fuzzy, narrow and leaves either my shoulders or toes out in the cold, it's a throw. LOL. If it hangs on the wall and I can't afford it, it's art, quilted or otherwise. Gigglesss

Wow- I think it's a "you say potato, and I say potahto" kind of thing. I don't make wall hangings or table runners, or minis, just because they are not my thing. I make larger quilts. (and bags, and pillows...) I have alot of respect for the time it takes to make art quilts and minis. That said, I have no interest in making them myself.

In my world, and historically in my family, tied quilts are also called quilts. I have one my great-grandmother made more than 100 years ago. And my husband's made of feedsacks by his grandmother, 63 years ago.

I also have no ego with my quilts being called blankets- I give them away hoping that they will be loved and used up- I don't make heirloom quilts, and there is nothing sadder to me than a quilt that stays pristine in a closet instead of being used. I also know that this is just me.

We are all different. This board allows me to see new and wonderful things that I might consider making, and also that I will never consider making, but enjoy seeing. It's a cause for celebration, not diviseness. So yes, I know what Lavona meant, but I don't think she intended to offend.

How about a quilted wallhanging?

smagruder 12-08-2010 04:20 AM

What about calling it a quilted wallhanging?

I have also been wondering about any size being a quilt. I suppose anything quilted is considered a quilt. With all that work, it should be called a quilt anyway.

Amen!

The inmates are always calling their quilts "blankets." I am constantly correcting them! And they're making them!!! Their job title is "Quilt Tech," not "Blanket Maker."

I guess because it's something you put over yourself to keep warn, it's a blanket!

My avatar is a wall hanging that is about 5' square.
