I found some beautiful fabric at a nearby Walmart yesterday morning. It is part of the quilt of the month for May fabric line. On the selvage it had David Textiles. I could not find anything to suggest it was less then the quilt shop quality cotton. It feels, cuts, and sews better then the Moda fabric I have. The fabric clerk told me not many Walmarts carry the quilt of the month fabric with free quilt pattern every month. She said it was ordered separate from a buyer that contacts the store fabric manager. It's up to the fabric manager if the line is carried in the store if the store sells fabric. The fabric dept manager at this store is a quilter! I think that makes a big difference in how profitable the fabric sales are. Most of the craft/fabric managers have no interest, just doing a job.

Ours carries it, and it sells out as soon as it hits the store :D:D:D

deranged_damsel 05-12-2010 06:08 AM

thank you! I will keep a lookout for it :)

Candace 05-12-2010 06:14 AM

Wow. How much is it a yard?

CarrieAnne 05-12-2010 06:18 AM

Thanks. I need to see if either of our Walmarts has it!

BellaBoo 05-12-2010 06:22 AM

I paid .......$2.44 a yard.

bkb 05-12-2010 06:23 AM

ours runs $2.44 per yard or $2.97.

Suzanne57 05-12-2010 06:36 AM

Is it the English Garden pattern? I got that one as a fabric group of the month May 2010. I also got the last piece of fabric #3. I bought extra of each material as "you never know". If not needed for the quilt top, it builds the stash. So far the Walmarts in my area carry a small collection of fabric but I also have a Joann's Superstore and Hancocks within driving distance.

Candace 05-12-2010 06:43 AM

Can you post a photo so I can see what it looks like? I guess this teaches me not to be such a Walmart snob.

BellaBoo 05-12-2010 07:12 AM

My camera is giving me a white screen. I guess it's a goner.

Candace 05-12-2010 07:15 AM

Oh shoot! Poor camera!

Pam 05-12-2010 07:23 AM

I buy stuff from Walmart when it suits what I am working on, Jo Ann's too, I buy what looks like good quality, and both of those carry a wide range of different qualities of fabric.

I just bought everything that I needed at a dry goods store near my town. YES a dry goods store! Did you know that they were still out there?

It is called the Farmer's Store, over 100 years old, has always been in the same family. The recently moved the wedding, formal dresses and shoes to another shop, called that The Farmer's Daughter!

BellaBoo 05-12-2010 07:26 AM

How nice! I haven't been to a store like that in years.

Guess I'll be checking the fabric at the WalMart

thequilterslink 05-12-2010 07:32 AM

Love that pattern, very pretty...off to walmart i go :)

piledriver 05-12-2010 07:52 AM

This group of fabrics are from the WalMart QoM program but they are not from DAVID Textiles. The printed pattern and the un-marked fabric in this photo are from A.E. Nathan. Occasionally, there is a 2nd free pattern in a given month available at WalMart and this one always seems to be from David Textiles. In my humble opinion the David Textiles are a bit nicer fabric quality. However, I am happy to say that the few A. E. Nathan projects that I have assembled (key words here FEW and ASSEMBLED) have come out very nicely and were just what the doctor ordered for a brand newbie. I have liked them so much that I make a point of buying them each month. My thought process was I'd have plenty to work with once the fabric departments have disappeared. Looks like here in the Baltimore area that will be sooner rather than later.
Chances are if your store that is remodeling didn't have first a 25% off fabric sale; then 50% off fabric sale; and finally a 75% off sale prior to the start of the remodeling process you may be keeping the department.
Have fun while it lasts.

The store in Dade City, Florida did have the sales, but they WERE NOT marked or advertised -

And then one day everything was loaded up and taken away.

BellaBoo 05-12-2010 07:59 AM

I got two of the fabrics in the picture. The rest of mine are different. And they all have David Textiles on the selvage.

sharon b 05-12-2010 08:16 AM

I have two WalMarts close to me , one gets only the patterns, the other only the fabrics , go figure

bkb 05-12-2010 08:16 AM

Did you see the one named Memories? that is the one I bought.

sewjoyce 05-12-2010 08:47 AM

While my WalMart has fabric -- it doesn't have the BOM!! One of the ladies I talked to in the fabric dept. said the manager hates the fabric dept. and won't order the "good stuff"! He's trying to make sure the fabric dept. fails....isn't that silly??

BellaBoo 05-12-2010 08:50 AM

When the local Walmart here put the fabric on sale to get rid of it, it started at 50% to get it gone fast. I happened to be in the fabric dept early early that morning. The fabric employees said they weren't allowed to call anyone to tell them of the clearance (stupid Walmart rule) and they didn't know if the truck would be there that night or the next to get what wasn't sold. The clerks were blindsided with the closing of the fabric dept and were upset no one knew. I whipped out my cell phone and called my guild members and others that I knew relied on Walmart for notions and fabric. In less then an hour the dept was full of everyone I knew and many they called along the way. The store manager rudely asked one of the employees how so many knew about the sale so early. Every woman customer started telling him off about trying to keep it quiet after all the money they spent there! It didn't take him long to get back to his office out of sight.

Suzanne57 05-12-2010 09:27 AM

KBunn, That's the group I have!

pam1966 05-12-2010 10:09 AM

I have to go there today after ds wakes up from his nap. Like I need an excuse to go back to the fabric area, lol!

Granna of 5 05-12-2010 10:14 AM

I found this site and love it. Our wal mart has already discontinued the fabric. But maybe through this site I can
acquire the quits and fabric.http://www.aenathan.com/index.php?tmpl=quiltofthemonth

Does the Jackson wal mart still have fabric?

Here there was no dicsount on fabric at W M.
They took what they had and totted it off to the nearest, other W M.
I wanted to buy 10 yeard of something and one I picked out had about 3 different cuts of material. All the same print, but 2 were remenants from other rolls.
Only thing discounted was the stuff that nobody wanted like the lace and satan stuff.

I found a working camera. I try to buy one fabric I really don't like that much because this helps me to be more creative. The large pink floral is the one I don't really like. The top two are my favorites.

Candace 05-12-2010 11:07 AM

I went to mine today after this posting. The fabric dept. was there a month ago. Now it's gone. In its place are a bunch of garbage cans. Interesting..

piledriver 05-12-2010 12:23 PM

I have been in contact with a gentleman at Nathan. I'll have to go to another PC to get his info, I'll PM that to you. Here's the scoop: You can buy the quilt of the month fabrics directly from Nathan ... here's the catch - you have to order full bolts of each fabric in that months project. Prices were reasonable - even though I buy extra (more than the pattern calls for)each month that's still a LOT of fabric. I could use up a full bolt each month of ONE of them by using it as my backing fabric, but that sure would make for a LOT of extra fabric especially when the pattern calls for maybe only 0.75 yard (that does occasionally happen too) of one fabric.
...what to do? ...what to do?

Our Walmart doesn't have fabric, but I might check in the next town when I go there.

piledriver 05-12-2010 12:27 PM

WalMart's equivalent of a scavenger hunt!?!
