Has anyone used any kind of Walmart fabric? If so, what has been your experience?

Maride 12-27-2009 11:56 AM

I find some os good and some is bad. I always wash it before I use it. I have found some very good sale fabric for 50 cents a yard.

Yes, Some is better than others, but none (in my opinion) is high quality. It is a good choice for charity quilts.

I was wondering. My sister is wanting to make a quilt, and was wondering about their flannel to make one. Not a rag quilt.

scrapcollector 12-27-2009 12:26 PM

I have also seen some cottons in there that would make a cute quilt, but was afraid it would not be thick enough.

A lot of their flannels are quite heavy--check the fiber content on the end of the bolt to see if they are 100% cotton. If it is a blend of manmade fiber and cotton one may experience pilling :-( . What is pilling? It 's when little fiber balls appear on the fabric due to the fibers rubbing against each other.

Thanks a bunch for the tip.

MollieSue 12-27-2009 12:38 PM

I've bought lots at Walmart, and never had a problem with any of it. :)

sharon b 12-27-2009 12:58 PM

At my local Walmart the flannel os so thin you can see thru it, so I stay away from it. When Joanns has their flannel on sale , it can be cheaper then WalMarts. Just check the quality of each fabric

Every project is not intended to be an heirloom...at least, not in my world...and I've found some really great fabric that couldn't find its way to an lqs with a map...LOL. I've also seen some fabric in an lqs that I'd never buy. I'm drawn to a fabric's color/print but I buy fabric that has a great feel/hand. There seems to be no advantage to being a fabric snob.

I use WalMart fabric when I find a Walmart that still has some. I use it for utility quilts and projects like placemats and potholders. I stock up on fusibles and Warm and Natural batting. It's half the price of Joannns or Hobby Lobby. I've noticed some of the utility quilts, the cheaper WalMart fabric is fraying at the seam line, they will be used for whatever quilts so no biggy.

sharon b 12-27-2009 01:25 PM

I find very nice cotton fabric in WalMart, but in the WalMart near me the flannel isn't that great. You just have to watch the quality, and in my WalMart we are getting a LOT of fabric marked unknown content  Just like in any store you have to watch , I have seen bad fabric in joAnns, Hancocks and LQS

Lneal 12-27-2009 01:34 PM

What I have used from wal mart I put on the back of my quilt and it faded badly.Did not like the results but didnt pay much

hereca622 12-27-2009 01:42 PM

In the past, I have used Walmart ,JoAnn and Hancock fabrics. They are fine for stockings, charity quilts or kid quilts. I have made quillows that lasted for years and that were used to the point of nonrepairable. Also good for nursing home quilts and people that may not appreciate the time and money that you spend on a quilt. If you are making a special quilt that will be appreciated and cared for for many years, I would buy Quilt Shop quality fabric. I only speak for 100% cotton and have not purchased flannel from Walmart. Feel the fabric and look for clear colors and patterns that are not blurred.

hsquiltingmom 12-27-2009 01:51 PM

I have bought fabric at Walmart and have been pleased with it. I agree that you do have to really feel it, and hold it up to the light. So far, though, I have not had any problem with it.

So true! When I first started quilting, the only place for me to get material was Wallmart, and those quilts are still in use, that was 12 years ago. You just have to check the feel. A lot of these small LQS do not have high quality material, but still sell it at high prices. So, just pick what you like and what feels right for you. Also, if there is a Hobby Lobby near you, they have great material. You can go on line and get a 40% coupon any time you want it. I am not a big Joann's fan either. Also, check on line, lots of places are having sells.

I've used WalMart fabric -- some of it is really nice and some of it is really bad!! :D :D

stashblaster 12-27-2009 04:27 PM

I don't use Wal-Mart fabric for my quilts. I do use their fabric for lots of craft projects, crayon rolls, purses, kid's clothes, etc. I give quilting lessons to my co-workers, I will tell them to buy what they can afford. Many of them buy fabric from Wal-Mart and that is ok with me. We all need to work within our means. If I'm making a quilt for a child that will get drug around, I think Wal-Mart is a great option for fabric.

I buy a lot of flannel at my Wal-Mart for baby projects. Yes, they have had inferior flannel but what I buy is from AE Nathen. Their flannel selection isn't as large but the price is right.

When I first started quilting, I could only afford Walmart fabrics. One of my first quilts was a Kalaediscope, made ten years ago and cherished by my daughter. I just had to replace the outer border. It rotted completely -- totally disintigrated. I am now very, very careful about what fabrics I use. All the other fabrics in the quilt were Walmart fabrics and they are ok. So, how do you know which fabrics are bad and which are good?

How do you know which fabrics are bad/good? I always do a "feel" test. How much starching is in the fabric? If it's stiff as a board, it's gonna be really thin after washing and thus I leave it there. Can you see through the fabric? Hold it up to the light and if you can read your driver's license through it, leave it there. Check the end of the bolt for what it's made of -- 100% cotton or is it a blend? Hope this helps :D

Bevanger 12-28-2009 05:38 AM

WHEN I buy fabric, I buy only there .

Rose Marie 12-28-2009 06:58 AM

I use it mostly for backings. You can get some good fabric and some bad there so be careful.
I have made several quilts with their fabric and so far they are fine but they have not been used enough to find out how well they hold up.

luvstoquilt301 12-28-2009 07:07 AM

I have a quilt I made out of cheapy fabric from there. The dog lays on it all the time and it was been washed ALOT. It has held up well for 4 years. go figure

There are so many wonderful online shops selling quilt shop fabric at very good prices. All I buy from them now is VIP like the High School Musical for a specific quilt for a child.

same here, it is the only store within 1/2 hour to buy fabric.

QuiltMania 12-28-2009 08:00 AM

I've bought from Walmart, Joanne's and LQS. Some of it was very good and some was garbage from all 3 places. Location of purchase is no guarantee of quality. You have to check the fiber content, feel the fabric and check the thickness.

Iluv2quilt 12-28-2009 09:16 AM

I buy fabric from our local Walmart and I also buy fabrics from online stores, at Joann's, the LQS(40 miles away), and a fabric store (20 miles away). This walmart has a ton of material to choose from, some is $6/yd, some $2.50/yd, some $1.50/yd. The flannel is nice, I've not had a problem with it. I usually stick with the feel, thickness, not buying anything I can see through. When I first began quilting I didn't know the difference in thread count, etc., I used anything cotton, lol. The $1.50/yard stuff fell apart with the first washing, so now I won't buy any of that, and I have to replace the quilt. Oh well, live and learn :D . Good luck!

I was asked to make two quilts for a friends' grandchildren for Christmas. He purchased the material from Walmart. The Cinderella material was of very nice quality, and worked up nicely. The Transformers material had a rubbery feeling to it. It was a bugger to work with, the thread kept fraying and breaking, and I even had two needles break during the decorative quilting stitching. The material had been washed and dried, yet the rubbery -whateveritwas- remained. I agree that there is 'good' and 'bad' fabric, and what I purchase depends on what the project will be.

Jingle 12-28-2009 09:49 AM

I use a lot of Wal Mart fabric and they have all worked out very well. White on white is all very good quality and so is the cream on cream. A lot of their fabrics around here are good quality, some are a little thinner. Years ago some were actually a little too thick for quilts. All in all they are a lot cheaper than Jo Anns and I have found same pieces at Wal Mart and at Jo Anns and Jo Anns is much higher.
