Washing Batiks & Knowing What's the Right Side

I am getting ready to pre-wash my first set of batik fabrics after reading many posts advising to do this before cutting. My question is how will I know what the right side is vs the wrong side after washing and drying?

if you can't tell .... it probably doesn't matter (at least, that's my philosophy)

same here .... I just choose the side that looks best for what I want to do. Just as long as you're consistent I don't think it matters.

I didn't know there was a right or wrong side. I suggest you use Retayne. Here is an interesting article.... http://www.batiks.com/a_batik.html

Sometimes the design is a little sharper on the front. But whatever looks good to you is all that matters. What I do is to mark the back of the yardage with a chalk pencil before I cut, just a rough grid a bit smaller than the pieces I plan to cut. Then I only have to decide once which side is which. :)

Right side is the smooth side.

Thanks for the feedback. I still need to get the Retayne this weekend so I get these fabrics washed.
