I just came across an old handwritten note in my genealogy papers (October 1898) that mentions a "Broken Brick" pattern quilt and am wondering what this pattern looks like - does anyone know or have a photo of this type of quilt?

I have never heard of it but would like to see it if you find out. Verrrry interrrresting

Thanks - that gives me an idea of what it would have looked like. Seems that the quilt in my note was a gift from a mother (my great, great grandmother) to her daughter (my great grandmother) and son -in-law, but it had been bought from someone else not made by her.

I just love finding little notes like that. Do you have the quilt or know what happened to it? It's just another of those old patterns that we should continue making and adding name to the back so it (name with pattern) continues to our children. Thanks for posting this.

No, I don't have the quilt or even know what happened to it. According to the note the quilt was being sent to the daughter along with a box of "remembrances" - it had been purchased from a peddler on October 19, 1898 in Tuscola, Illinois. Wish I knew what happened to it.

That is a simple pattern but makes for a really nice quilt. Maybe you could make one and put on the label "in remembrance of" then your story of the note you found.
