What can I do with double knit?
 

Inherited my MIL's huge stash of fabric, notions, etc. There's about 5 yards of blue double knit that I haven't got a clue of what can be done with it. Any ideas?

Some of the members here have said that they make dog beds out of that type of fabric as it washes better.

I use the double knit to make table mats by stripping the fabric and braid the fabric. I then hand sew the braids into round or oval mats. I like the fabric because it won't stain mats as much as cotton fabric if someone spills on them.

You can make quilts out of double knit and donate to your local homeless shelter. It wears like iron. Pet beds would also be great. The rugs would also be great use.

Until I used up all my doubleknits I put them inside my baby quilts as the batting... it has just enough loft, it dries quickly and is 60 inches wide. and no one knows it's there...

Double knits are quite warm , use them in place of a batting ( as suggested earlier) . It could be a bit of a issue if you have light color fabrics in the quilt top , as you would see the blue.
Or use it as a backing on a picnic , stadium quilt, or car quilt, the double knit will repel water. It won't be water proof but won't be nearly as absorbant as cotton.

I volunteer to make quilts from double knit for homeless and nursing homes. We just cut up 9 inch squares and make two color quilts, 5 rows by 5 rows. Then put solid double knit on as backing, right sides together. Stitch around, leaving opening to turn right side out. Then just top stitch. You can tie every other block with yarn, if you wish. They are sturdy enough to last through years & years of washing at nursing homes. If you don't want to stitch them up, contact local quilt guild, they should know of some organizations that make blankets for shelters and such.

I just repaired my brother and sister-n-laws double knit quilt. It is made of large 8" blocks sewn together with batting and a flannel backing. They love it because it is so heavy and warm. It is tied with yarn in the center of each block. Just thought I would share. Teresa
