what is a "chip"?

I was reading the current Quilt Maker magazine, it is their anniversary edition, and they were talking about how things have changed over the years.

At one point, they were talking about pre-cuts popularity or when it began (don't have the mag with me-sorry). And they said "chips, jelly rolls.....".

Well, I know jelly rolls, honey buns, turnovers, layer cakes, charms, dimes, nickles, dessert rolls and probably a few more, but I have never heard of "chips"! What is that?

Or, maybe my cold/flu brain just misunderstood what they said>>>>>

jcrow 03-23-2012 10:23 AM

Have never heard of that either!

OzarksGma 03-23-2012 10:45 AM

This is what Northcott calls their 5" squares from the Stonehenge collection, actually they call theirs "Strips and Chips"
which is the 2 1/2" Jelly Roll and the 5" Charm Squares.

Chips are what Northcott calls their 5" charm squares from their Stonehenge collection.

mighty 03-23-2012 11:49 AM

Thanks I did not know that either.

Wagoza 03-23-2012 11:59 AM

I am so lost... Most of those I have not heard of. Technology terms have hit the quilting world.

sandy l 03-23-2012 12:02 PM

Well heck, and I was about to ask if the chips were plain or flavored:D

alikat110 03-23-2012 12:16 PM

Chips are potato or grain based snacks, available in a variety of flavors. My current favorite is pizza flavored Pringles!!!! Hehehehe

Cybrarian 03-23-2012 12:22 PM

I was lost once you hit "dimes, nickels and dessert rolls".

nativetexan 03-23-2012 12:27 PM

hey, i'm still figuring out crumbs!!

Sandra in Minnesota 03-23-2012 01:19 PM

Are chips and crumbs related?? hehe

Peckish 03-23-2012 03:17 PM

I think they're in cahoots with the Hostess people. lol

stampinteresa 03-23-2012 04:34 PM

Thanks for the laughs, I was really getting down in the dumps -- missing family while still in Indy. I , too, had to look those terms up. Teresa

Handcraftsbyjen 03-23-2012 05:26 PM

Thanks, I didn't know that, nor had I heard of chips before.

pacquilter 03-23-2012 05:37 PM

I think those are what we eat when we're quilting...

cizzors 03-23-2012 06:26 PM

well, 35 years ago, I knew what nickels and dimes were. After you finished them, you had your dessert. Just saying.

Hahahahahaha............ Love it :) I was fixin to say the same thing but dif. time frame

SunlitenSmiles 03-24-2012 03:04 AM

dimes are ten inch squares like layercakes
nickles are five inch squares like charms and chips
dessertrolls are five or sometimes six inch by width of fabric
and crumbs are odd shaped leftovers that you just cannot part with

BTW i luv Stonehenge.....

labtechkty 03-24-2012 04:15 AM

Didn't know that...great question..

ptquilts 03-24-2012 04:20 AM

I remember when charm squares were in all sizes, now the Moda people seem to have convinced everyone they have to be 5".

stitchinwitch 03-24-2012 05:26 AM

First time I ever heard about chips...now where is the dip?......I'm getting the munchies!!

hoppa 03-24-2012 05:54 AM

that is a new one on me too

lfstamper 03-24-2012 06:56 AM

Always something new to keep us guessing and intrigued!

Geri B 03-24-2012 07:02 AM

those dimes and nickels will soon be called "jackson" ($20) and whomever is on a $50, sorry can't put my hands on one just now....ha,ha,ha. And who will be able to afford a "dessert roll", we will all be using "crumbs"............

karate lady 03-24-2012 07:52 AM

what are dimes and nickles......and for all you sillies, don't tell me money...LOL......

NUBQ 03-24-2012 08:55 AM

AHHH!! Sorry your feeling badly ... heres a bunch of hugs from all of us silly people... hugs1 hugs! hugs! :):):):

WMUTeach 03-24-2012 11:25 AM

And I was guessing a 2.5 by 2.5 square. A quarter of a charm which is a quarter of a layer cake, which is..... Well I was wrong any way. I like my chips with lots of onion dip but it makes sewing so messy. Really clogs up the works. Tee-Hee!

JanieH 03-24-2012 04:14 PM

That was interesting information. Now I know what to buy when I am having a "snack attack"!

Veronica 03-24-2012 04:17 PM

Your all so funny!

Suzbo 03-25-2012 04:47 AM

Now I'm confused. Do I look for a patternor for a recipe/menu when I have time to quilt? LOL

nhweaver 03-25-2012 04:51 AM

All these food terms make me hungry!!! Chips, dessert rolls, jelly rolls, turnovers, layer cakes - designed by women for women!!!! My DH said that yankee candle can get men to buy their candles if they made meatloaf, pot roast, hot wings or bacon scented candles!!!

glenda5253 03-25-2012 02:28 PM

Learned another fabric slang today. Thanks for the thread!

First, thanks for the answer what chip was! Glad to know I was not the only one, not in the know!

Second, thanks SunlitenSmiles for explaining what some of the things are, to those who had not heard of them.
To this I will add that the best place to remind oneself of what all the size are is the ModaBakeShop, under Bakery (see http://www.modabakeshop.com/p/bakery.html) also the Weights & Measures tab tells how to cut those pieces into common block parts.

quilt addict 03-27-2012 01:58 PM

So I have a shoe box full of 4" charm squares. What do I call those? How do I adapt the nickle patterns. I think it is a conspiracy. Pass the salsa!;)
