What to do with finished quilt tops until you're ready to quilt them?

I was wondering how everyone stores them?

craftybear 02-16-2010 05:00 PM

I just did a search and found this cool idea?

Fold them and put them in a wicker laundry basket.

mic-pa 02-16-2010 05:10 PM

I hang mine folded on a coat hanger

Candace 02-16-2010 05:17 PM

I like the hanger trick. I guess it's probably best to use a plastic hanger though.

katier825 02-16-2010 05:48 PM

If I can fit it in the closet, I hang it. If not, it goes under the bed in a storage bag. I would like to purchase some comforter hangers. They are heavy duty and open on the side, so they'd be easy to put the quilt on, especially if I've already sandwiched it.

Boston1954 02-16-2010 05:48 PM

Several of mine are sitting in plastic boxes along with the other fabric. I need some backing. Tops done. Lots of batting. Have to wait for tax money, and so they sit in boxes, or the cedar chest.

MadQuilter 02-16-2010 05:58 PM

Some are hanging over the banister (with a towel to keep kitty paws off) and others are folded away in the cabinet.

yorkie 02-16-2010 06:10 PM

I have purchased one of the wood folding drying racks for clothes. I fold them gently and hang them on the rack, that way they do not get wrinkled. If it is going to be a while before they get quilted, I will fold a towel into them so there are no hard folds which can wrinkle.

JUNEC 02-16-2010 06:16 PM

I put mine in the 1 1/2 gal Zip Lock bag.

patty48 02-16-2010 07:06 PM

I hang mine on a hanger with the cardboard insert from a paper towel on the hanger.

moreland 02-16-2010 07:19 PM

I have a shelf dedicated to "need to be quilted" quilts. I also store things in my big suitcases (I've quit using them for traveling--too big and too heavy) but they work well to store quilts in. I also have storage bags under the bed.

june6995 02-16-2010 07:36 PM

My husband built a quilt rack for my unfinished quilts. It is A-shaped, similar to a step ladder and is about 6 feet tall and 36 inches wide, with dowels for hanging quilt tops waiting to be quilted. It was custom made to fit a particular corner of my sewing room.

I always seem to have several that are waiting for the quilting process (not my favorite part of doing a quilt). I have them folded and placed in a very large plastic storage tub from Target. With the lid on it, I dont have the problem of my " critters" trying to take a nap on top of them.

Loretta 02-16-2010 08:56 PM

I stack them up until I can quilt them. Seems like I always have a big stack.

I like this idea!

Damkina 02-17-2010 12:01 PM

Usually just folded up on the shelf, but I'm going to go for hanging them instead from now on. Really like the idea... less ironing! :?

During the holidays I organized my Mother's quilt closet. She had 41 quilt tops. We indexed them and stored them in pillow cases. Some had the backing purchased so we put that with the top. She just purchased a long arm quilting machine, so hopefully the quilting will go faster as the floor frame went under the bed to make room for it.

k3n 02-17-2010 12:09 PM

Mine hang over the bannister. My kids have learned NOT to trail their hands through them as they go upstairs - some are pin basted already - it's a good deterrent!

quilterjody 02-17-2010 12:11 PM

I hang mine on a hanger with the binding. I put the binding in a zip-top bag and put a hole in it and hang it on the hanger. That way I'm not searching for binding.

nativetexan 02-17-2010 12:13 PM

goodness, i have them laying on the guestbed. i must move them before we have company. i dont' like to wrinkle them but wish i had more storage room that than for them.

Barbm 02-17-2010 12:44 PM

I hang them in the closet on the hangers you get pants on. Just 2 clips hold them, no wrinkles from folding over a hanger. I can see them at a glance to know what's waiting.

Jim's Gem 02-17-2010 01:02 PM

I use a large quilt hanger, formerly called a treadmill. Much better use, I think. There are about 8 of them hanging there at the moment.

Ha ha! I remember you showed a pic of that a while back Gayle! I agree, MUCH better use for it! ;-)

Except I really need to use it and lose some weight!! I can't right now cause I am having a lot of knee pain. I have just been waiting for my shoulder to get better before going in. I have an appointment to get the ball rolling next week. I kept thinking "one body part at a time" but I can't wait much longer, I need to be able to walk!!!

I also use a wood drying rack. I wrapped the rungs with a small piece of batting I spayed adhesive on and covered that with a strip of muslin. I have small quilts, wallhangings on the lower rungs. A few a folded with the backing.

jljack 02-17-2010 10:38 PM

Mine sit folded with their intended backs on top of a box under my quilting frame. Right now there are 4 quilts under there, whispering to me to come & finish!!! Hush!!! Can't you see I'm busy!!!

Rettie V. Grama 02-18-2010 08:15 AM

I like the coat hanger tip. If you have a plastic hanger, to keep it or your clothing from slipping blue foam on it all the way around. Two birds with one stone.from

weezie 02-18-2010 11:00 AM

At present, mine are in large plastic containers (with backing fabric if I have it) stacked on the pool table. If I have the binding strips already cut, I have them hanging up to keep them wrinkle-free. (Nobody plays pool anyway, but if they wanted to, it's an easy thing to move my containers.)

bob1414 02-18-2010 11:34 AM

I store mine in Space Bags, which are the heavy duty plastic bags that get the air sucked out of them with a vacuum.

mar32428 02-18-2010 01:23 PM

I thot we weren't supposed to store them in plastic cause they need to breath.

crleslie 02-18-2010 01:54 PM

Am I the only one who can't bear to have it hanging around so I quilt it as soon as I finish?!!! My girlfriend thinks I'm weird because I don't just buy fabric because I like it! I only buy when I need something and always go through my left over fabric before I buy anything! I know, I'm so not any fun..........Do you think this story will change when I have grandchildren??!!!

PineyRiverQuilter 02-18-2010 01:58 PM

I store the top, back, and binding on a hanger in my sewing room closet. Then when I have a few ready and can make the trip, I add battings and take them to my quilting lady (about 45 miles away). Usually make an outing of the trip with either hubby or other quilting/knitting friends. Of course, lunch is in order and usually have to hit a few shops along the way. We leave early and come back LATE! LOL

cuppi duke 02-18-2010 02:04 PM

I emptied my linen closet. All my finished and unfinished quilts are in there, you don't want to know what I did with my linens.

janet conn 02-18-2010 03:06 PM

Hi, I have a wicker laundry container. It holds quite a few tops.Peewee

elfvinnd 02-18-2010 03:08 PM

I store them on a quilting rack in may spare bedroom. That way they are still on display but out of the way of new projects.

I have a large cardboard suit box from when DH bought a suit from Land's End. It opens hingestyle. I store them in there with those little moisture eliminator packets that come in things like new shoe boxes. I also wrap them in acid-free tissue. They fit (in the box) perfectly under my shelving unit in my quilting room. Since DH does not buy suits frequently I am forced to finish one of these projects every once in a while to keep the box from being over stuffed. I wish Land's End would just send out these boxes free upon request.

Rose Lee 02-18-2010 04:45 PM

I fold mine and hang them on hangers behind the door with the backing material, til I am ready to quilt.

Quilter2B 02-18-2010 05:10 PM

I have one hanging in the closet on a skirt hanger, one is in a plastic bag (that you get sheets in from the store) with the border fabric and another is hanging on a hanger from a hook on my design wall (aka closet doors covered with white flannel sheet). I love the idea of using the tube from paper towels (I always knew there was something I could use those for!).

JoanneS 02-18-2010 05:18 PM

In CT I hang them on the over the stairwell railing. In AZ I leave them on the table mocking me until I give up and quilt them. I try to not start a new top until I finish quilting the current one. Last year's exchanges (Black&White and DearJane Christmas) ended my good intentions! And my frozen shoulder and weeks of pain and PT have interfered with my goal of finishing ANYTHING while I'm in AZ for the winter. Thank goodness, the PT is finally showing some progress - just not enough to be able to sew. I can spend HOURS reading what my pals here are up to, though! At least my BRAIN is still in the quilting world.
