Fussycut and hoochy corner.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 04-10-2010 04:12 PM

Fussy cut is to cut a particular design element out of the fabric so it is centered in a square. For example, cutting a dancing Cinderella out of a larger Disney print fabric.

Hoochy corners? Beats me, but if it's a quilting term someone will know.

brookemarie19 04-10-2010 04:19 PM

I haven't ever heard of hoochy corners either

mamaw 04-10-2010 04:24 PM

I want to know what a hoochy corner is too...LOL

Ditto. Where did you hear or read the term? It may be easier to understand when the context of the term is known.

Could it be a badly matched corner?????

QuiltingGrannie 04-10-2010 04:31 PM

I Googled 'hoochy corner' and found.....

get this.....

It took me to this thread!!!!!

JoAnnGC 04-10-2010 04:35 PM

LOL...the only time I have ever heard the phrase "hoochy corner" was in reference to certain locations where ladies of the evening strut their stuff!

dkabasketlady 04-10-2010 04:51 PM

I'd like to know what it means also! I've never heard of hoochy corner before, I even called my DM(she's been a quilter for as long as I can remember) and she didn't have a clue either!

littlehud 04-10-2010 05:41 PM

That's a new one to me.

I read this while googling!

"Anyway, in the quilting world, thanks to Mary Lou's book and workshops, to hoochy a block is to deliberately misalign the corners of the fabrics you're piecing, which renders measuring pretty much unnecessary and careful sewing a thing of the past."

Pam 04-10-2010 08:30 PM

LOL, hoochy corner! Since the lines don't match maybe is should be called scootchy corner!! Better than mixing it up with the "ladies of the evening". Even those girls want their seams to match.

Gal 04-10-2010 08:42 PM

I thought as much, 'hooch' in my book is Whisky, so no wonder, after a few shots, who would care about matching anything up!
Must admit I had never heard of this expression before with regard quilting.

Gal

SaraSewing 04-10-2010 09:00 PM

I agree - Hooch is booze. And it could be kept in the corner, under those UFO's. No one but a quilter would think to look there.

Gal 04-10-2010 09:21 PM

LOL Sara, sorry I do not know how to do the quote thingy!

see the reply or quote reply buttons - in the yellow area at the bottom of the last response. Just use that to quote, or to post photos.

In the white area under the reply, there is a quick reply. Probably that is what you are using.

Gramof6 04-10-2010 09:44 PM

Well Thank You! LOL I have learned more today from this site. Hoochy Corners. ROFLOL Hmmmm

I love it!
And here is a poem from her linked page, not mine but so true!!:

A POEM FROM MY AUNT BONNIE WHO ALWAYS SHARES GOOD STUFF
Best poem in the world =
I was shocked, confused, bewildered As I entered Heaven's door,
Not by the beauty of it all, Nor the lights or its decor.
But it was the folks in Heaven Who made me sputter and gasp-
The thieves, the liars, the sinners, The alcoholics and the trash.
There stood the kid from seventh grade Who swiped my lunch money twice..
Next to him was my old neighbor Who never said anything nice.
Herb, who I always thought Was rotting away in hell,
Was sitting pretty on cloud nine, Looking incredibly well.
I nudged Jesus, 'What's the deal? I would love to hear Your take.
How'd all these sinners get up here? God must've made a mistake.

'And why's everyone so quiet, So somber - give me a clue.'
'Hush, child,' He said, 'they're all in shock.. No one thought they'd be seeing you.'

Years ago my secretary came into my office and said you have an appt. tomorrow with "a realllllllll Hoochy Mamma!" I had never heard the term but she enlightened me...she said she calls the ladies who walk around "advertising their bodies in risque clothing, using vulgar language and being loud and too touchy feely as being a "Hoochy Mamma." Do you suppose a Hoochy Corner is a loud, vibrant corner on a quilt????

I think I'd say it was a badly matched corner. Like the other night at our quilting group. I saw two quilts - show n tell. One was perfectly matched while the other one was hard on the eyes because of BADLY matched corners. It just didn't FLOW.

OMG, that is hilarious. When my husb. & I used to travel to places like Las Vegas or Hawaii, we'd stand out on the balcony of our rm. & watch the girls work the streets. Sad but funny, too.

I sure hope somebody can find out what a hoochy corner is.
