I go to auctions and estate sales I am only interested in older sewing items because I feel they have had a life before I got them that they have more quality in the way they are made that they have more style sometimes. Recently someone says to me thats stuff isn't vintage its thrift shop stuff I consider it vintage if its over 30 years old and is in good condition thrift shop to me is like goodwill or salvation army where you can pick up anything but the life of the item is not there. Are you understanding what I am trying to say? What do you consider vintage?

Me, only kidding, if its 100 years old that considered antique. Most people say vintage when they are not sure how old it is but they know its old. I am selling some "vintage" sewing stuff on ebay. I used the word vintage for search purposes, but they are antique, sending a link for you to take a looky.

They are calling stuff from the 70's "vintage" now and in a way, that is an accurate term. Vintage means from a particular era or period in time or from a specific batch--think wine.

Thrift stores have all kinds of stuff so I don't know why you would not expect to find vintage items in there. They have brand new stuff with the tags still on it, entire estates of household stuff as well as the usual junk. Estate sales are where many people find their fabulous "vintage" Featherweights and boxes full of fabric so if the relatives don't want a walk through estate sale--they often just dump the entire estate off at their local thrift shop. In some areas, Goodwill & the Salvation Army even have big trucks that will come and pick it all up.

Same way with flea markets now. I was shocked to find booth after booth filled with brand new merchandise. I thought flea markets were always used and/or antique stuff until we went exploring around Fort Lauderdale many years ago. I can't even remember seeing any used or antique stuff at a couple of the flea markets we went to down there.

When I asked on the vintage thread, Billy indicated pre 1975 is vintage to him and others agreed. That means all my machines except the serger are considered vintage. Guess which one is a piece of junk?? Uh, huh, the non vintage one. My Elna SU doesn't know she's vintage, just non computerized.

Answers.com says anything over 30 to 40 years old is considered vintage; did not ask about 61, I know I'm OLD :)

How do you think I feel from the 30's? Just about everything in my house is now vintage.LOL When I see sales of things from the 50"s, I could cry thinking of things that I just tossed out! I have one ashtray that I paid ?5 for, and saw it advertised last week for $45.
