I have been searching all over for a pattern and find that there is not one I like. So I want to be creative but what size do you see as being big enough? I have to make 8 for a Christmas dinner I am hosting. Most I have found say 4.5 x 4.5 but some I have see are more rectangular??? See my confusion.. Thank you. jade

Seems to me that would be about right. Okay, add another half inch. At a holiday table things are going to get crowded and shoved around. These will protect glass and fine wood tables. I like the idea, they will be in addition to place mats so should mix and match with the mats. And you might want to add some hot pot holders to protect the tables from heat. Make them fatter than the place mats. I've found that if I keep adding insulation to them it will be enough if I can hold a hot dish in my hands with only the heat protectors under the hot pot.

There was a thread a few days ago about this topic. You might do a search...

I have a note that mug rugs are approximately 7-1/4" wide x 5-1/4" high. They are usually rectangular. I made one today. It's 9-1/2" x 6". They're supposed to hold a mug and a snack.

There is a Mug Rug Swap group on flickr and there isn't any set dimensions on size or shape just that it's big enough for a drink and a cookie. I have made coasters for the table and I think they were about 4.5 inches square. There are lots of photos on flickr.
