I'm new to the quilting board but I love it. I'd like to know what english piecing is?

I love paper piecing - is it like that? I need all the help I can get. Sister Sal

Greetings from Sacramento area CA. I have never done English Piecing but read that it is a form of paper piecing. I think it is used mostly for hexagons (Grandmother's Flower Garden) or other shapes that nest into each other. The fabric is sewn "around" the paper template and then each piece is sewn to the next. Here is a tutorial:

English paper piecing is a very old form of hand piecing blocks. You use a piece of paper that you used a templet to mark a shape, cut it out and then you either iron or baste the fabric onto the shape from the back side. Make tons of them! The pieces are then sewn together with tiny stitches along the edge to make a quilt. Grandmothers flower garden is one of them. It uses hexegons. I have even heard of the women leaving the paper in it for warmth.

LOL, leaving the paper in would sure save the time of trying to pick it all out! All I know about "paperwork" is that my mom stitched through the paper , by hand, and when I trid it, I just destroyed the shape while trying to get the paper out. Of course, I was in my teens and not really interested then in quilting or learning how. Oh. how I wish that I had listened and tried harder while mom could teach me!!Mom could do all the handwork sewing so well , but she did think that I machined sewed better than her!!
