I have been looking at the gorgeous pictures of everyone's quilts. They are absolutely amazing and beautiful! It just got me thinking (as a newbie) what everyone else started with.

So, what was the first quilt you made?

Jan in VA 09-27-2010 11:59 AM

My first finished quilt was a triple rail fence from the Mary Ellen Hopkins It's Okay If You Sit on My Quilt (Because I Can Make Another) technique. Made for my daughter. By the end of that 6 weeks course, I had made 2 more, a Court House Steps Log Cabin and one other I can't remember at the moment, all finished and bound.

Before I found quilting, I had made 12 candlewicked blocks which I wanted to put in a quilt, but didn't know how. I soon put that quilt together and started my first handquilting venture, totally self taught. That was 28 years ago!

Mine was six inch square blocks sewed together for my DGD. I used solid pinks and purples and alternated with fussy cut princesses. She still has it and it finds it's way to the livingroom to cover up with while watching TV.

Sadiemae 09-27-2010 12:03 PM

My first quilt was a stack and whack. Noone told me to only use cotton, and one fabric was a poly-blend to get the right color. I have still not quilted it, but I will someday.

Mine was a feathered star wallhanging that I gave to my mama in 1993..all hand pieced and quilted... it hangs on my own wall now...

I started with a log cabin because it looked easy!

Up North 09-27-2010 12:10 PM

My first quilt was a star flower because I didn't know half square triangles were supposed to be hard, it is my avatar pic it came out great and I hand quilted it.

My first one was a king size T-shirt quilt made from my south Louisiana festival shirts, collected over a 10 year period. It was sashed and bordered in blue and white prints. My DS and ddil have it now. Oh yes, I took a class to learn how to do it; that was in 2003.

amma 09-27-2010 12:27 PM

Square in a square paper pieced blocks :D:D:D

MadQuilter 09-27-2010 12:29 PM

My first top was a sampler but it isn't finished (and probably never will). My first finished quilt was a full-size pieaced crocus in winter white, green and lavender. For my brother's wedding. The same year my sister got married too so she got a Log Cabin.

trip around the world baby quilt - then I was hooked...

plainpat 09-27-2010 12:34 PM

No 1 was a K size braid quilt, second was a log cabin & third was an Amish pattern....don't remember the name. All made the 1st winter we spent traveling after DH retired. When they were returned after the LA quilter quilted each with a diff pattern, I was overcome.

Wonky,bias....none of that mattered They were beautiful in my eyes & started my love affair with all quilts.Only another quilter can truly appreciate all the work & worry that goes into a quilt.

moonangel12 09-27-2010 12:38 PM

I made two basic square quilts for DH while we were dating - one in HS (a bit too small... I was young and didn't think through the height difference - I'm 5'4" so it was plenty big for me, but DH is 6'1"... Duh!). He requested a bigger one in college which he still uses today. My grandma helped me and we used cardboard for the "template" which was no where near square and of course I didn't realize how careful you have to be when tracing, cutting and sewing... needless to say I don't think I have a single corner that matches up! Oh, and both were tie quilts that had miscellaneous sheets and old blankets for "batting" - I paid for them myself so the cheaper the better!

cjomomma 09-27-2010 12:45 PM

My first was a baby quilt made of jeans in simple squares sewed together with a flannel backing and tied. I put it in the wash and it almost fell apart, LOL. So I went and bought a bunch of baby iron on patches to cover the places where it came apart. I had no idea what I was doing and that was 7 years ago. I put the whole quilting idea down and didn't touch it for a couple of years. Mind you though the quilt was very loved. I laugh everytime I think of that first one. The parents tell me they still have it.

The first quilt I made was a sort of Log Cabin, at the time I had no idea what it was called or had no idea what I was doing other than making myself a quilt. My mother had made my oldest son one and I soooo... wanted one. One day I was at the Fabric store and seen some Horse print, so I just looked and measured the one my mother had made and came up with what I ended up with. At the time I did not know what a rotary cutter was, or WOF, or Log Cabin (as far as being quilt related). I drew my pieces on with a ruler and they were by the grain of fabric, and cut them out with a pair of scissors, and dutely pressed all my seams open( as was the correct way with sewing of clothes). (Thankgoodness for Rotarty Cutters!!) LOL. (The Quilt police would of had a hey day!) I have learned so much in the last 5 years and fell in love with quilting.

I think that it was a baby quilt made from sock monkey fabrics. It was an arrangement of squares and I thought that my first grandson would enjoy it. He's 3 now and had to took it to nursery school for his rest mat.

wolfkitty 09-27-2010 03:11 PM

My first quilt was a brick pattern, using red for the 'mortar', and browns, tans and yellow for the bricks. For the fabric, I used leftovers from clothing that I had made, and bought only one or two colors. I used a sheet for the backing, and tied it because I didn't know how to quilt.

My first quilt was from santa claus samples that I had collected after doing pillows. I had 8. I hand stiched them to the block; did the sashing by machine and embroderied the quilt together using a holly leaf design. It was the hardest thing to do - to embroder through all those layers!

My first quilt was Eleanor Burns Lover's Knot. I tied it.

mic-pa 09-27-2010 03:42 PM

Mine was attic window, I picked the pattern because it only had three pieces to it. No points match and I use a cardboard template and cut it with sissors. OH my, then I hand quilted it. Still have it and it has polyester batt in it. Very warm though. Then I made a 4 trip around the world quilts for my kids. They completely wore them out. That was way back in the80's.

skydiver70 09-27-2010 03:45 PM

A Dresden Plate full size quilt. I pieced it and Mama quilted it for me. About 55 years ago.

MommaDorian 09-27-2010 03:47 PM

Here is a link to the first quilt I made. It's the first one in the list, I made it for my DD, who is almost 7.

My very first quilt was a collaborative effort...my mom and her sister had started state flower quilts for their hope chests back in the 1930's and had all the designs ironed on the muslin blocks. Some were colored and embroidered, some not. As a HS home ec project in the 1960's I finished coloring and embroidering the blocks and then added sashing and corner blocks. No rotary cutting! All the sashing strips were torn across the width of the fabric. I added too much seam allowance so there was lots of fabric left at the ends of the strips when I attached the corner blocks. We had a family friend do the hand quilting for us.

Did not do another quilt until 4 or 5 years ago when I decided that quilting was the next craft I wanted to try.

First one that I did everything on was a hand-pieced 'nap' quilt made of vintage fabric for a birthday gift to the great granddaughter of the person whose fabric it was originally. My scant 1/4" seams were closer to scant 1/8" and the fabric was mostly batiste, so it raveled and had to be repaired quite soon after I gave it to her. By then I knew I needed a bit wider seams, so I made the seams a little closer to what they should have been the second go round. She is stll using it now (or was back in May).

My first quilt was a 52"x52" Frolic Variation block quilt. My BFF taught me...when I picked out that block, she said, "are you SURE?" I guess it was more difficult than I should have attempted. But we did it, and I learned SO MUCH from starting with a more difficult block. I did finish it, quilted it, and it hangs on a rack in my living room. My grandkids like to take it down and play on it. I like it a lot.

prairiequeen 09-27-2010 03:58 PM

Log Cabin and boy was it ugly.

Robinlee 09-27-2010 03:59 PM

My first quilt was a Astronaut- the suit and boot parts (applique) with gloves sewn where the little guy could put his hands through to give hugs while in bed. I was in high school and the school secretary knew I did sewing for some teachers (mending and alterations). So she asked if I would be interested. Took the magazine home with me to showed my mom and we did it together. It fit a twin bed and for her son that was about 7 or 8 years old. I remember making a pillow case that had the helmet on it, so it would look like a whole suit with helmet. When I can find the only photo we took that happens to be a polaroid, I will scan and upload here. This would of been aroundd 1976 or so. I didn't do much quilting for about 10 years, was more into sewing clothes and I did ALOT of that. So now I do both, and my grandbabies and attest to that.

This is my first...

Finished less than 2 weeks ago - and my daughter and I have done another one together since, same basic premise ( http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-66876-1.htm ). I'm in the cutting stages of my third, and have fabric for the fourth!

The first quilt I ever made was a teddy bear quilt for my nephew. It had a large bear holding the strings to about 3-4 balloons and was machine appliqued. I then taught my little sister (she's 17 years younger than me) how to make a small Log Cabin "throw" for our mother -- my sister's idea, not mine. I didn't do anymore quilts for quite a while until I found myself on a committee to organize events and activities for the anniversary celebration of the church I was attending. It was the 100th anniversary of the church and the 50th anniversary of the school so I thought a quilt would be a nice touch and would be something many people could participate in constructing. Then I got the brillant idea to have it include 100 squares!! Well, I didn't get 100 individual squares. A few of us on the school staff designed and made large squares out of the leftover small squares for each of the four corners and one for the large square for the center. Pretty much any method was permitted for the block designs. Volunteers were given a white cotton square and the instructions regarding the block. Some were embroidered, others were painted with fabric paints or markers, a few were photos of the church, and a couple were appliqued. Each block was so unique. The quilt ended up being 100" x 100" (so I at least got in the number 100!), and I hand quilted that puppy in a hoop!! I had never done handquilting in my life! It was one of those moments when you ask yourself: "What in the world was I thinking?!" We hung the quilt on a wall of a wing off the sanctuary. I often wonder if that quilt is still there. Maybe I'll get brave and post a pic of that "beauty" sometime.

Once upon a time.... so many years ago when I was a young mom. My first quilt was made of denim and double knit fabric squares. The backing was a sheet and I tied it. That quilt was so heavy, it made it's way thru several years and ended it's life as a car quilt.

Dingle 09-27-2010 05:46 PM

I made my first quilt for my Hubby. I bought some hunting-fishing fabric and did a D9P. I made it for him when he goes hunting because he always stays in a tent. I could tell when he came home he didn't use it. It was still neatly folded and smelled like it was just washed. Maybe he thought the other guys would make fun of him. I don't know. I never brought it up.

Mine was A Kwik Trip by Two Kwik Quilters.

I made my very first quilt over 30 years ago for a friend's first baby. It had embroidered blocks and then the alternating blocks were in green and white gingham. It was between baby and lap size.

I didn't quilt anymore until just about 5 years ago (was busy raising a family and working), although I did continue to sew for all of us and our home. This time I made a large wall quilt by transferring about 15-20 photos for my niece depicting her life from birth to age 9. See below.

After that, I made my first 'real' quilt. It was my first BOM, the sampler quilt below. I made it for my Sister.

I learn something new with each project. Right now I'm working on a queen sized wedding quilt for my oldest son and new bride.

I have drafty windows. And I had no idea what I was doing but I knew I had to stop that draft. So I made a simple sid nine patch. I used an iron on batting... never again see the corner curl.. and then having two more windows to do I custom made the Fans...
