my nephew is going to college and thought I might make him a quilt. he wants to pick out the fabric and said I could do whatever I want with it. I'd like something not too hard (i have 2 little ones at home & not a lot of time!) and not too girly looking if that makes any sense. I was thinking something like turning twenty or D9P but wasn't sure what else there was out there for a young man. Please let me know! thank you in advance!!! (oh and pictures would really make me happy! LOL)

Disappearing 9 patch is fun, quick and easy.

Log cabin or some simple stars sprinkled in with nine or four patch blocks. I know the stars are more work but my boys seem to like them a lot.

Any of the easy block quilts can look masculine - it depends on the fabrics.

I made an Irish chain out of tan, brown and black for one of my nephews.

You can also do a bit of research and see if his university has licensed fabric with the school logo/mascot. Or do a simple 9 patch with school colors.

D9P is a great pattern, takes time though.
Pinwheels done by laying 2 squares right sides together, sewn all around 1/4" seam. Cut horizontally and vertically.
Open, press, resew into the pinwheels.
You can use any size squares.

Warm Wishes always looks good, is easy to stitch and you could use his school colours. I often make these as college bound quilts and use Polydown batting as they tend to get dragged to All Movie Night and Football games.

Take 5 is pretty easy to.
It says it only takes 5 hours (I was picky and it took longer but I can see how that would be doable.)

This is a great idea. Even if they do not have licensed fabric you can maybe do the mascot. My son's university did not have licensed fabric so I made a big panel out of tiger fabric with a black kona border. I made him a tiger stripe pillow case with Kona black edge to go with it. Besure to make it extra long. Many of the dorm beds are now all extra long.

I would choose Warm Wishes (you can use the fabric that HE chooses as the solid blocks..its also a free download!)

You need to scroll WAAAAY down. Its in the center. nine patches on point and school letters in the middle (or you could do a logo or something else in the center.

I made one for my husband called Magic Squares, pattern I bought was from Erica's, store is also online. Will try to post picture, but there is one online also. Very good for a guy Sorry, can't load picture.

I like the warm wishes too. made a rail fence and while it is not hard-it can take a bit o time

Just how "masculine" the quilt is more dependant on fabric choices than the pattern. Take any pattern and you can change the look entirely based on color choices. Unless he's picking out pinks and pastels then I think you'll get a masculine or neutral quilt with just about any pattern (but I'd avoid the ones that depict images of flowers for the masculine theme). And in the unlikely event he does pick out a lot of pinks and pastels you can easily pair it up with black and it'll look more punk than "girly". By "girly" I mean "This should belong in a bedroom with a Disney princess theme".

thanks everyone! I think I've got some good ideas here. he really wants to choose the fabrics so I will let him do that. still not sure w/ what I will go with but one of these mentioned for sure. I have so many projects that need to be worked on! I am wondering if I'll ever get to his!
