What Kind of Paper?? do I use for PP That does NOT Cost a lot. I tried Newspaper but that didn't work. I Thought that the women of the 40's used it but wow my machine ate it up, then I rethought it they hand sewed OR did They??? Maybe we have rotten Newspaper??? HELP!!!

I just answered this in your last question! :) I like tracing paper...it's cheap and it rips well without having to perforate the lines ahead of time.

I would not use newspaper, for a myriad of reasons...but the most damaging I would think to be the ink getting all over your machine and your fabric and making a huge mess. If you're on a budget computer printer paper or tracing paper work fine. If you use the heavier computer paper, just sew along the lines with out any thread in your sewing machine before you start paper piecing, so it will be pre-perforated and rip easy when you're ready to take it out. With tracing paper you can eliminate the pre-perforation step, because you will be using small stitches for paper piecing and that's enough to loosen up your paper.

On the other threads many of the ladies like the specialty paper you can buy that is made specifically for paper piecing. I don't find it necessary for my needs, but I can see how a specialty paper of that sort, say, if it is water soluable, would be very helpful to someone who might be selling their quilt, putting it in a show, maybe making the quilt for a baby, or just want perfect results. :)

I have heard of people using velum also.

I have some good old fashioned "typing" paper that works great. I have been known to use computer paper too.

Just popped through the other posts and now I realize what I think you're talking about - blank newsprint? Someone said they use childrens doodle pads...I didn't know that was blank newsprint! LOL* Shows what I know!! Lol** I would think it would be too thin for me personally, because it shreds when my kids play with it! :)

I used to use regular computer paper until a friend gave me several pieces of "foundation paper" from our LQS. I'll never go back. It is so much easier to crease & sew and tears away soooooooooooo much easier. I need to try tracing paper too - I'll bet that's better yet - and cheaper. :roll:

Writing paper is very good also and easy to tear.

I also heard you could use the pages from a telephone book, just the white pages, the yeloow pages have too many lines on them

Hey Quilt'n Tex....I only use the regular plain 'ol computer paper!! I am too busy to cut,size, etc any other paper and a I did try the suggested paper for piecing...it was waaaay too expensive. And, I don't think it is worth it at all! Only 1 important thing...I shorten my stitch length...this will perforate your paper for easy tearing later...Skeat

I just picked up some typing paper to try. It's a bit thinner and was really cheap. 50 sheets for 50cents!
I bought a couple packages and tried it. WORKS GREAT!
I'm going back tomorrow to get the rest that they have. Maybe they'll cut me a deal!

Kiddie doodle pads ... the kind made from blank newsprint

I just noticed that the paper in my spiral notebook feels like a pretty good weight. y'know ... the kind they sell in the school supplies section. i bought a case of them (for another reason) for 10 cents apiece. how exciting to know i might be able to use them for fun and not just for work. :mrgreen:

check office supply centers and online for paper between 10 - 15 lbs. pinfeed computer paper is usually lighter weight than standard copy or printer paper.
