I would like to subscribe to my first quilting magazine and was wondering what everyone's top pick is. I know there have been topics discussing magazines before, but if you had to choose one (and only one), which would it be?
|
My Favorite is probably McCalls, But are you sure we can only pick one?
|
Yes, only one....
|
My favorite is "Quilts and more" because I like to do other little projects too. I am still a begginer so this is a great one for me.

I can't pick just one!
I'm thinking of a way I can get rid of some of the ones I have...too expensive to throw away but really kinda useless to me...would like to pass them on... Right now I like that Quick Quilts from Fons and Porter... Big quilts, little quilts and projects that can get me sewing in a day... Kirsten |
American Patchwork and Quilting is my pick. But, my sister loves Quilters Newsletter. Confused yet? In the past I have subscribed to Quilt, and Quiltmaker both, but keep going back to the 1st one.

Since I really am not looking for a ton of ads ,the latest patterns and colorways, I have found the best way to buy scads of magazine. --- E-bay. ---- :!: I just bought lots of 40 mags, some as cheap as .99 :D The postage brings the price up, but some as cheap as 4 for a dollar. I just won 11 auctions. :D :D
lol Buy some this way, and you can make up your mind what you like |
That's a really good idea, Ruth!
Kirsten, you can send them my way! |

I used to get several. Now I only get Fons and Porter.
|
one of my favorite magazines for just looking at is quilt sampler it features quilt shops in different states and shows the inside of them the staff and how they started etc...just alot of fun for looking at and if you travel it would be alot more fun because then you could plan a trip to one that might be off the beaten path...and they do feature a quilt for each one of them so you could actually do a project to...I love looking at cozy quilt shops...this magazine is only out twice a year though Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter...but oh so fun to look at...

My vote would be McCall's or Fons & Porter.

i just subscribed to BHG American Patchwork and Quilting . . . .
i get all of the others from the library - McCalls, F & P, and several others. if you have a library close by, you might try that. it has saved us TONS of money. our library is in a group so i can go out on-line and request what i want. if my local library doesn't have it, they will bring it in from one of the others in the group. takes 3-4 days, but still saves money! |
I finally bought my first quilt magazine a couple of weeks ago - the American Quilting Society one. I do, however, have several quilt books. It's almost as inexpensive to go to Half-Price Books and buy their books with no advertising to wade through as it is to buy quilt magazines.
Of course, in the one magazine I bought, I did find a fabric supplier offering a free catalog . . . . I agree that the library is a HUGE resource if you have one near. We are not currently in a library-friendly city, but my daughter works at a bookstore and if I find something I want, she buys it and uses her discount - 35%!!!! |
Fons and Porter. They have two, "For the Love of Quilts" and "Easy Quilts". Either way their patterns are easy to follow and the magazine is well designed.
I spend a lot of time at the library with quilting books. |
I subscribe to about 5 different quilting magazines, but I truly think that Fabric Trends is my favorite. I always find something I want to make in each issue.
|
I am a magazine addict, too!
If I had to subscribe to just one, though, it would be Australian Homespun bc it's got lovely quilts, and also dolls and bags and cross-stitch. Not too many ads, and the ones they do have are usually for local shops. Great magazine! |
I like to get the QuiltMaker's All-Time favorites. It only comes out a few times a year. But it's usually 12 patterns from previous issues.
====off topic=== I just put a pic on my profile and realized it's already taken. Guess I need to go find a new one so you won't confuse me with GrannyCat (she had it first, darn it) |
I use to get them all but now only subscribe to Fons and Porter ....Did You Know................ Eleanor Burns is publishing a QIAD magazine, should be making it's debut in April at Paducah. :D :D :D :D
|
Fons and Porter Love of Quilting and also Fons and Porter Quick Quilts. However, you can only get Quick Quilts on the newsstand, no subscription unless you join their club.
|
Funny thing. My son subscribed to Sewing Savvy magazine. He got his "issue" today. It was Quilters World. It has a note the Sewing Savvy is out of business and his subscription will be finished with Quilters World. I'm not sure he is happy about this but I am. LOL.
|
The first one I ever subscribed to, some 10 years or so ago, was McCall's Quick Quilts. It was the way I learned to quilt and I still get it. Easy directions, nice patterns.
|
My favorite is Better Homes and Garden Quilting mag. You can find it here at: http://www.bhg.com/bhg/store/product...odid=prod80002 I find that I have more projects for my buck here. Too many magazines are doing the preprinted panel quilts and for the moment..that is okay. But, to want to go back to it later...what would you do? They have great hints, etc. Then they come out w/a 'Quilt Sampler' that is a must! Can't subscribe to that so it is a hunt and chase when it comes out. It is the top 10 shops and features quilts and patterns from each shop, plus the shop. W/each state and town listed on the top of the pages. Fons and Porter for me is a 50/50 when they come out. I don't subscribe to them because I actually pass up some of the issues due to nothing of interest for me. Skeat
