What pattern is behind Bonnie?

go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=S7i6Wrl4rZ8 and look at the quilt on the wall. Anyone know name of pattern?

QuiltE 01-21-2013 09:31 AM

I think you mean Jenny?

Not too long ago, there was a thread asking the same question.
I'm pretty sure the answer was given there.
... so you might want to look for that thread.
Or perhaps someone will give you the answer!

tlambing 01-21-2013 09:34 AM

Looks like a cathedral window.

NanaCsews2 01-21-2013 10:00 AM

I have the book Better Homes and Gardens Creative American Quilting. On page 55 there is a quilt that looks exactly like the one on Jennys wall. They call it the Snowball Quilt. The quilt dates from the 30's and 40's.

misseva 01-21-2013 10:05 AM

Thanks, I was thinking snowball but couldn't see it clearly enough. And yes, I do mean Jenny.

QuiltE 01-21-2013 10:16 AM

It's not Cathedral Windows of which I am familiar ... of course, there may be a different style.
Likewise, not a snowball ... and again, perhaps there are variations?

misseva 01-21-2013 10:18 AM

I know - I tried to enlarge the pix and it seems like I can see triangles or something in corners.

MTS 01-21-2013 10:38 AM

It's like a Spiderweb block with reverse coloring.

Instead of the stars being muslim and strips used for the coloring of the octagons,
these are pieced with the 30's fabric in the center, and two large pieces of muslin on each side to form the QST.

Here's the other thread - http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...y-t209545.html

I don't know that I'd have quilted it in the grid pattern but here are the components:

It looks like the 10 minute block to me. The sides pieces (off white in my dample) stitch together and look like a circle.

ube quilting 01-21-2013 02:43 PM

It is not a snowball either. I have always callled this a humming bird block. I may be absolutely wrong on this.:D
peace

I just realized that Jenny Doan also has a tute for a spider web quilt. The pattern is the same its just in reverse colors and no string piecing. Clear as mud?

love to sew 01-22-2013 08:07 AM

yep, that appears to be it.

Charquilter 01-23-2013 06:34 AM

One name for the block is hummingbird. My grandmother made one in the 40s, and I have seen a couple others from the 30s.

BellaBoo 01-23-2013 06:42 AM

It was said it was an antique quilt from her collection. It was in the comments on the video page.

solstice3 01-23-2013 07:33 AM

looks like a variation of the cathedral window

Quilt Almanac 2013-on newstand now, from editors of Quilt magazine...it is on the front cover, lower right corner and its instructions inside either call for template cutting or paper piercing......lots like it would be fun to make, I do think though that this one has a bigger "star", but still scrappy....I am going to attempt the paper piecing one........

They are similar in look (if that's the block you were both referencing), but the construction is very different.

The hummingbird is made up of 4 smaller square blocks, giving the appearance that the star is on point.
Also, the secondary pattern is different - no more octagon shape, which is what I think makes the Spiderweb quilt so cool.

Alas, you still have to match up all those points when joining the blocks.

Thanks for mentioning it - I hadn't heard of the "hummingbird" block before.

My Mother always called this Periwinkle Star. It is not a cathedral windows or snowball, but it appears it is also called Arkansas Star. I have one my Mother made in the 1970's. Love it!

MTS 01-23-2013 10:12 AM

All these different names are very interesting:

Here are some templates for making a "Periwinkle Star" - but I think that would be only for hand piecing.
Or EPP (cutting off the seam allowances).
I wouldn't bother attempting this by machine - doable, but I'm not a masochist.
http://www.ozquilts.com.au/periwinkle-star-p17031.html

And here's the piecing for the Arkansas Star (as a 9patch) - this looks to have the easiest piecing and would still get you the octagon, but you do have those extra seam lines.

BILLSKATHY 01-23-2013 10:46 AM

I too, fell in love with this quilt so I sent a message to her. I just got a reply that said that it is an antique quilt of Jenny's and that there is no pattern to offer. Some of the answers from other board members are so close that I believe we could put one together.

MargeD 01-23-2013 11:05 AM

name of quilt pattern

I've seen it under many names, but I made a similar quilt years ago and it was called Arkansas Snowflake, and I've also seen it named hummingbird. You could go to quilter's cache and might find a few more names.

Charquilter 01-23-2013 12:13 PM

Pontiac Star is another name

farmquilter 01-23-2013 02:31 PM

I have a small antique piece and was told by a quilting elder it was Hummingbird. Mine is done in fabrics from the 20's-30's.
The white corners are one piece and the top is all hand pieced.

GeeGee 01-23-2013 09:08 PM

It is Hummingbird. I was looking at some back issues of my quilt magazines this morning and what do you know, there was the pattern in Issue 65 Jan 2000 "Traditional Quiltworks'". This magazine is no longer being published, which is a shame because it was a great mag. Unlike the Arkansas Snowflake this pattern only has 8 pieces, 4 kite pieces and 4 background pieces which makes the snowball when the blocks ore sewn together.

Valerie Scherr 01-25-2013 02:08 AM

I got the same message when I contacted Jenny it was one of her antique quilt and no pattern was available yet.

momsobon 02-07-2013 04:26 AM

Jenny had this on yesterday called it a perriwinkle quilt and used the wacky web ruler.......there is a tutorial on this on youtube

QM 02-07-2013 04:44 AM

I believe it is called Arkansas Traveler.

I'm unwound 02-09-2013 06:01 AM

There may be other names but I know it as Periwinkle.

katydidkg 02-23-2013 04:46 AM

The pattern for this Periwinkle quilt is in Quilting Quickly summer 2013 magazine that just came out.

mouseface 02-23-2013 04:55 AM

its her wacky web quilt i watched the video on it the other day look fun

nanac 02-23-2013 06:54 AM

It is called Periwinkle, and she just put out a tutorial on how to make it, because of all the requests for the pattern. If you go to the MSQC site, you could probably access the info you need.
