I made and quilted a pillow cover for someone. I spent about 6 hours on it. What should I charge of the the time spent quilting and assembling the cover. Never done this before for payment. Do I charge by the hour? I spent about $30 on the materials.I don't know the person . I made a pillow for my daughters puppy and the breader where she got him from liked it and wanted one. Any suggestions you have on figuring this would be helpful.

Can you use some of your scraps for the material?? If not I would tell her to provide the material and charge 30.00 for labor.

Can you use scraps or an old pillow stuff for the cushion inside??? That would also help with the cost. If you can get the cost of the materials down you would be able to make a bit more pocket money. If it were me buying I would not pay more than 30.00 for a dog pillow...but that may just be me...many people spend alot on their animals and themselves. Me... I look for the deals or make it myself.

I agree there is a limit on price to pay...Of course I'm a compaison shopper and know I can buy a dog bed at the Christmas Tree Shops for 19.99...So you better ask her how much she's willing to pay, might not be worth making it.

wow! $30 just on materials...that is one expensive pillow! normally people suggest making a choice...either charge an hourly rate...or triple the cost of materials...so if you did that it would be a $90 pillow...or (at $20 an hour) $120 pillow by the hour...
but not everyone charges $20 an hour...decide what you need your hourly wage to be...
but if you plan on making more to sell i would recommend finding a way to cut costs a bit...that is awful expensive for your materials...or sew faster...i would think an hour on a pillow would be pretty normal after you get the hang of it..
i know when my mom learned to make a 20-minute pillow case the first one took her about 4 hours...i made 6 sets in the time it took her to make one case. with some practice she takes about 45 minutes now per case...
