what size backing and what size batting should i buy?
 

i finally got my baby quilt top done.
the finished top is 48" wide and 60" long.
what size backing and what size batting should i buy?

You need at least 2-4 inches larger on each dimension so I'd say you need to get a full size batting and cut it down. You can use the leftovers for pot holders and crafty projects.

As for the backing, you may be able to get by with a single width of fabric (as long as it is AT LEAST 42" wide) by 64" long which is roughly 1 3/4 yard.

If your quilt is 48" wide, you will need approximately 56". So you will either have to buy wide back fabric (2 yards) or regular width (42") fabric (3.25 yards, allowing for uneven cutting on the ends).

You can use John Flynn's method of diagonal backing. I believe (according to his formula) you would length plus about 1/2 yd. Not sure unless do the calculations. You can find the directions on his web site. Sure saves on backing fabric

You can use warm and natural or warm and white. If you want poly, look on the packaging, it should say what the distance of the quilting can be.

Are you planning to quilt this on your regular machine? by hand? send it out to a long-arm quilter?

Are you planning to wrap the backing around to the front to finish the quilt? or are you going to use 'regular' binding on it?

Warm and Natural batting you have to quilt 10" apart so you will need to add quilting to your squares if you opt to use this brand. A twin size will be sufficient for your quilt. You will have leftover.

Quilters Dream Poly and Dream Green are the only two batting products on the market that I am aware of that allow you to quilt as far apart as 12"
