what size block hst
 

I would like to make something like this using scraps what size strips do I cut to make the block if I cut 5 1 1/2 strips I think I will get a 7 1/2 in block then do I cut a 7 7/8 in square cut the diagonal for the end and side pieces.....then sew the rows on point that I can follow looking at the picture it's the math ALWAYS the math and in all honesty I don't want to buy the the pattern it looks easy enough.heres the link http://www.nancysnotions.com/product...ilt+pattern.do# thanks stay cool

5 x 1-1/2" strips would give you a 5" finished width.
To get the 7-1/2" finished you would have to cut 2" strips.

When you cut your blocks from the strip sets, measure the width of the sewn strip sets.
If your 1/4" seams are a thread or two off, then they will not be the 8" ... no sweat ... just cut the block the same as what the sewn set is and go with it.
That is providing all your sets finish at the same width. Otherwise, they need to be the same width.

The only HST I see in this pattern are the setting triangles. Make your strip blocks whatever size you want and here is a chart from Bonnie Hunter @ Quiltville that tells you what size to cut your setting triangles. http://quiltville.com/onpointmath.shtml

As a hint, I always oversize the setting triangles.
Sew it all together.
Then trim the side so it's nice and straight.
Be sure to allow for the seam allowance so you do not lose the corners of those strip set blocks.

I have the link Auntpiggylpn saved in my favorites and also have it printed and kept in my unique pattern binder. it is a must have.

For the setting triangles, which I think is what you are asking, you need 4half square triangles...one for each corner, but the 4 sides need quarter square triangles to eliminate the bias edge...I am not where I can get the exact formula, but I think for the QST you need to cut block 2" larger than your pieced block then cut into an X, thus getting 4 triangles. I am sure somewhere on line there is a cutting table available.
