i have a 18 x 24 matt..kinda big for toting around..
45mm rotary cutter gingher scissors,they have a black plastic one, and it is sooo much lighter than the steel ones..but the same size and quality. Joanns carries them. |
If this is your first and only mat, I would recommend one at least 24 inches in length. That way you will only need to fold your fabric once (selvage to selvage) to cut your strips. It'll fit nicely with that 6"x24" ruler, too.

As far as mat and rulers, I think it's a 18x24 that I use most. Idouble-fold my fabric so I get away with the 6x12 ruler, but I also like the 6x24 and assorted squares. I have an old Olfa 45mm rotary cutter but I would check out a more ergonomic type. |
I started with a 12x18 mat and wish I had a bigger one. It's nice but not big enough.
