What is this?

My friend found this in a scrap basket of Christmas fabric someone gave her. Does anyone know what it is? It almost looks like a cozy, but the diameter is quite small. Just thought somebody may have made something like this at one time or another. Thanks.

Pinkiris 12-23-2012 10:31 AM

Is it sewn anywhere? Can you show us?

OCquilter 12-23-2012 10:34 AM

Maybe a hot coffee holder

slicksister 12-23-2012 10:38 AM

Looks like a thread catcher to me.

My guess, too. The wings on the right side might be "handles".

DOTTYMO 12-23-2012 11:28 AM

Will it fit vin and over amug for pockets mug organiser
.

nativetexan 12-23-2012 12:48 PM

Im thinking thread catcher too. the flap fits under the sewing machine and holds the catcher in place in front of the sewing machine.

Here are three views of it. Each side (front and back) looks like the first photo, but it does open up like the third photo shows. Thank you!

peacebypiece 12-23-2012 02:14 PM

Looks a lot like the base square for cathedral window block, although I would not have used a print fabric. Maybe that's why it was in the trash.

mighty 12-23-2012 02:32 PM

I have not a clue!!!!!

Intrepid Niddering 12-23-2012 03:21 PM

Opened up, I have no idea wat it is, but all folded up, it reminds me of a paper fortune teller made out of fabric.

jbud2 12-23-2012 03:21 PM

I'm not sure but I have seen coasters where the base of the wine glass slips into the openings of the squares and then the glass, when it is being used, always has a coaster.

Pat625 12-23-2012 03:34 PM

I sure does look like a cathedral window base!! Interesting choice for fabric...wonder if the center was going to be a solid?

Yup!!!! I agree with this.

DOTTYMO 12-23-2012 11:24 PM

Machined cathedral window. OR.... a hat for a borrower or elf or pixie or fairy

happyquiltmom 12-24-2012 04:07 AM

It's a wine glass coaster. The base of the glass fits into the coaster so that it doesn't leave rings on the furniture.

MimiBug123 12-24-2012 04:10 AM

I think it's a part of a cathedral window quilt. It looks like a piece of the background that you would use to sew the square into.

JustAbitCrazy 12-24-2012 04:19 AM

I believe it's a coaster.

Looks like a thread catcher to me as well. Just needs buttons on the flaps.

Perhaps that is why it was in with the scraps. They started making it and forgot how to finish it. The thread catcher is usually a triangle, but I did see one recently that was a square.

alwayslearning 12-24-2012 05:07 AM

I thought coaster, also, but they are usually made with three different fabrics, not one.

Dont know what it is, but I bet it can be whatever you want!! :)

quilter2theend 12-24-2012 05:27 AM

Maybe it was meant to hold a Christmas candle?

That was my first thought too. Weren't those things fun?

clsurz 12-24-2012 05:38 AM

That was the first thing I was shown how to do almost two years ago by a lady here. They are coasters to use either flat or put a glass inside if it will fit at the bottom. I have some of them around here somewhere that she gave me back than and I use them for such when I happen upon one.

quiltmom04 12-24-2012 05:47 AM

I'll bet it was a mistake and that's why it was discarded .

Karen's Kreations 12-24-2012 06:23 AM

My first thought was thread catcher.

I agree with jbud2

mkinaz 12-24-2012 06:48 AM

It sure looks like a wine coaster to me - the round bottom of the wine glass stem fits into the center (the flaps go over the round part) and the "coaster" portion sticks out around it. Hope this helps.

Paula Fullager 12-24-2012 08:08 AM

Definitely looks like wine coasters:

Can you see the similarity. This is a cathedrel window 4 squares.

MartiMorga 12-24-2012 08:48 AM

An experiment that didn't make it?

Yes, definately a thread catcher!

SewOK 12-24-2012 03:19 PM

My guess is that it is a wine glass coaster that did not come out as the original person sewing it intended. I would put a wine glass in the center see if that is what it is.

Wine glass coaster is my thought, also, once I saw the picture of it laying flat.

Weezy Rider 12-24-2012 03:52 PM

Looks like someone made a fabric Cootie Catcher. You made them out of paper years ago to tell fortunes.

Treasureit 12-24-2012 03:54 PM

Is it an egg cozy? Can't really tell if it is that small.

grammabecca 12-24-2012 06:10 PM

To me it looks like a childhood game made from fabric rather than paper.

When I was a child we had a paper game that liiked like that. fingers were put under the triangles and your partner would call out a number 1-4 and then the fingers were moved back and forth to that number. this wa repeated 3 times, flip the inside courner out and a message was displayed. a silly fun pass time for kids great memmories

It might be a failed attempt at making an origami ornament or some kind of origami shape.
