I normally hand quilt all my quilts and love doing this i don't really like using my Brother sewing machine but recently i have had so many people asking my for hand made quilts and i simply cannot make them and hand sew the quilting it would take too long.
My question is i have never machine quilted before, what type of sewing machine is recommended for this or can i use my Brother sewing machine if i can what stitch should i use,,,,heck this is so confusing lol

It sounds like you have an older Brother? I have used my almost 20 year old Brother machine. You can do regular straight stitching like stitch in the ditch quilting. You may want a walking foot for this.

Mine came with a cover plate for the feed dogs to do embroidery or free motion quilting. A generic hopping foot or darning foot fits mine just fine. For this, set the stitch length to zero.

Just practice first - before you do the "real" thing!

Hi Oatw,
I purchased my Brother machine 2 years ago it has some fancy stitching on it but i only ever used the straight stitch on it then gave up because i preferred hand sewing so it sits there in the spare room gathering dust lol;I
really need to learn how to use machine properly and like you have said i do need to practise the machine stitching before i attempt to machine quilt a quilt lol
