Hi everyone,
I am working on my rows for the row robin swap and I want to do something special with a section of it. It is going to be for my daughter and she loves the soft, silky feel of things but I know a lot of materials do not sew well with cotton. Is there something I can use that will hold up to her loving on it?

Any closely woven polyester or nylon will outlast any of us. A polyester satin from the special occasion fabric dept at JoAnn's would be fine. The only caution would be to use a pattern with straight lines. Polyester won't ease nicely on curves as well as cottons. A wide satin ribbon would pass for satin fabric. Again, polyester, rayon is very shiny, but not as strong.

I've used polyester jacquard fabric with woven roses in throw pillows and I have a lot of grandsons who use those pillows. Not as soft to touch as satin, but it gives a pretty effect.

You could avoid putting it into the body of the quilt, and instead, bind it with the double binding generally sold for the edges of blankets. That way, if it wore out, it would be easily replaced.

I agree - some of the polyester satins are great - and washable.

The only cautions I might have - they may not be as tolerant of high heat as cottons - and use a wider seam allowance or something like Fray Chek on the edges - the ones I've used raveled very easily,

Having made multiple wedding dresses and prom dresses, I can tell you heat is not an issue with the polyester - a reasonable temp, of course. As for the fraying, the wider seam won't hurt, but more important would be a slightly smaller stitch length. You want to see a fabric fray, try silk organza. Yikes.

Binding with satin is not fun, IMO.

Thank you for the ideas! I had originally thought to bind it in the satin binding but I am not fabulous (okay I can not do binding at all :-( ) so that would not work. Maybe I will work up a test block in the polyester.
Would fleece work or no?

brushed arnel or cotton corduroys or cotton velveteen also work -

A lot of people have used fleece for a quilt backing.

Have you tried Minkee fabric? It is soooo soft and satiny. It would make a great backing and I am sure your DD would end up loving on it so much. I just love to touch it when I am in the fabric store. Expensive as all get out but wonderfully soft. JoAnn's carries a knock off of it that is slightly less expensive.

This fabric would be used as the letters in her name so it might not get as much wear but I know she will love to hold it there.

I've seen where people use chenille. You could use flannel or minky too. Both would be really soft for her.
