What would you charge? or how much would you pay?

I have an HQ-16 LA. I have quilted for QOV and baby quilts for Christ Child Society and myself. But I have never quilted for hire and still don't intend too. However, I was asked if I would be able to quilt for someone who is piecing a quilt for hire and what would I charge if I could do it. I don't think the quilt will be easy to quilt as she was requested to make the quilt from the women's daughter's baby clothes using the lace, trims and all the various types of fabrics into a "crazy quilt". So, that being said it can not be an E2E pattern and will probably need some stich in the ditch (which I don't like to do!) and all over meandering being careful to go around the items that would break the thread or needle. My thought was that if I did quilt this for money I would donate it to the charity that the woman piecing it and I are both involved in. She wanted a price so she could give a quote to the woman she is making it for. I suggested she get a quote from a professional quilter and it got me thinking what a pro would charge. The quilt is going to be 40 x 60. So what do you think? What would you charge? and if you don't LA what would you be willing to pay?

I would just leave it at that (the advice of getting a quote from a professional). I don't think you would make enough to pay for the stress and fustration.

many long-arm quilters charge by the square inch- anywhere from 1.5 cents a square inch to 2.5---or more probably-
but it does vary across the country- and by the quilters-some charge by the project- for me to quilt that size it would bbe $45 check with the lqs to see who they know & call for some estimates in your area

It doesn't sound to me like you feel you are even qualified to quilt this very personal custom quilt. I'd just tell your friend that you're not comfortable doing that kind of work, but possibly leave the door open for work that's simpler if she's in a bind. She should be getting quotes from pros in the area and letting her customer decide among them for both price and quality. It just doesn't sound like the kind of quilt that should be done "on the cheap".

if you have to worrie about embelishments, its a custom job, and more expensive I just don't know how much more.

I can't tell you what to charge just to quilt: I've done several and my fee starts at $500...that's to piece, quilt and bind...and they're boogers to quilt!

I think I would be hesitant to tackle it on a quilting machine. I would be afraid it would mess up the tension, break a needle etc. Since I don't own a quilting machine, I don't know how it would react to all the different trims, fabric seams and different fabrics. Good luck!
