I have to do most of my shopping on-line and I've already ordered several books, but some of them have not been quite what I expected. Still no loss, I love books and will enjoy them at some point.
I just wondered, what do you think some of the best quilting books are? What are your personal favorites and if you have time, why do you like them?

My favorite book is the Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Guide
It has everything you need! It is a large binder book with individual chapters. From measuring fabric to all the "how to's" you'll ever need. Well worth the price!!!

I have a shelf of favorites! Here's a couple:

1. For first time quilters, who are learning on their own: Carol Doak's "My First Quilting Book". It's full of good info, from how to do things, explaining all the little tricks and things that aren't in other books. Plus the book is so humourous, it's simply fun to read.

2. To learn paper piecing - Any of Carol Doak's books on paperpiecing. She explains things really really well, and has a few tricks she passes on. Again, humorous. It's not intimidatin when you read it and do it. Carol is one of the top experts in paper piecing in the land.

3. Marsha McClosky books. She has a couple. I like them for the quilts in them, the instructions and the easy to follow guidelines in making different sized quilts from the same patterns. Also has a great 'basics' section.

4. Again, for new beginners and/or those who need 'results' fast or they get discouraged: try any of Eleanor Burns "Quilt In A Day" books. Clear explanations, great sketches and photos. And will teach you exact 1/4" seaming, how to lock seams, etc. Get quilts pieced fast. Have something to show off fast. Once you master them, it's easy to 'move on' to more challenging piecework, paperpiecing or applique.

My favourite book is "The Essential Quilter" by Barbara Chainey. I've learned a lot about hand quilting, the British Quilting Tradition and wholecloth quilting by the book and there are lots of beautiful pictures in it.

Another favourite is "Traditional Quilting" by Mavis Fitzrandolph. This book is out of print for a long time and it was first published in 1954. I love the black and white pictures and the description how quilters worked at that time without all the helpful notions and easy to handle materials we have today. It's so interesting to read about the quilting history.

My favorite is titled "The Big Book of Scrap Quilts". It has dozens of patterns in it.

Barbara Bachman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns

My favorite is the book that has the pattern in it that I am searching for. Depends on what quilt I want to make!!
