I have not bought a "kit" before, but browsing through Connecting Threads new catalog, I see some really nice looking quilts that are "Kits".

Do they come with the fabric advertised? And is there enough to finish a project (usually minus the backing)?

BellaBoo 01-13-2011 07:55 AM

I always have extra fabric then needed for the pattern from a CT kit. If you don't then all you have to do is call them. They have great customer service. I will by a kit just for the fabric when it's on clearance. I have had good luck with kits from Hancocks of Paducah being generous with the fabric for the kits too.

MrsM 01-13-2011 07:58 AM

I have bought several quilt kits from Connecting Threads. I always have had fabric left over when I finished. I believe they provided the backing fabric. They usually tell you if it is included. I thought they were great.

I've bought a couple of quilt kits. One had more than enough fabric and one not quite enough. The one that was a little short on fabric was a homespun rag quilt. I just bought a few more quarter yard cuts of different homespuns and it was okay. I've not bought one online, both of those were from quilt shops. I don't know if that would make a difference in how they are put together. I really liked them. I can't really remember, but the homespun may have been short because I decided to make the quilt a little bigger than the size the kit called for.

Ditto, on BellaBoo. Although I don't usually buy a kit unless it is purely irresistible to me and I'm sure I can't duplicate. :-D

Jeanniejo 01-13-2011 08:20 AM

Most kits have plenty of fabric. The only ones I don't care for are the kits with panels and a backing. The instructions are to sew front side together and turn inside out and the sew end. Quilt is not large enough and has no binding.

laceybritt 01-13-2011 08:25 AM

When I first started quilting I bought a kit from JoAnnes and was very dissappointed. The units were precut and some were not cut correctly, also the fabric was thin.
The kits from Connecting Threads come with fabric and the pattern, you cut it yourself. Their kits come with the same fabric that they sale by the yard.
I have always been pleased with anything I have ordered from Connecting Threads!
I placed an order and qualified for free shipping, they were out of stock for about $20 worth that I ordered and they still gave me the free shipping.

SuzanneG 01-13-2011 08:42 AM

I usually prefer to choose my own fabrics, but sometimes the ones in the kit are so scrumptious, I can't resist. I've also bought two kits from Connecting Threads and was thrilled with quality and quantity of the fabric. They're just a great site to deal with all around.

Deborah12687 01-13-2011 08:44 AM

I have never purchased quilt kits but I just got a catalog of kits by Keepsake Quilting that I am drewling over. I might try and do one of there kits. Have anyone used there kits and are they good about the yardage.

0tis 01-13-2011 08:44 AM

I have purchased a couple of kits - mostly when they are on sale - I love the fabrics but I haven't started them yet so hopefully they have all the fabric. I like the kits because you know how its supposed to look.

Jamiestitcher62 01-13-2011 09:26 AM

I absolutely love kits. I suck at picking out my own fabric and tend to lean toward fabric collections, so kits and BOM's are what I usually do. I have been drooling over at Connecting Threads too and I love fatquartershop.com and Hancocks of Paducah is another one of my favorites. I am just starting the Wildflower Rhapsody BOM at thecottonquilt.com. She is very nice and I'm looking forward to seeing the kit.

pieces 01-13-2011 09:49 AM

I have never bought a quilt kit. When I make quilts I want mine to be made with fabrics of my choice and not like a hundred other people that bought the kit.

Raggiemom 01-13-2011 09:52 AM

I have bought kits a couple times and loved them. I've always had enough material but have never ordered from Connecting Threads so can't speak as their kits.

scowlkat 01-13-2011 09:53 AM

If you are going to buy a kit, you will have better luck buying from a reputable firm like Connecting Threads or Hancock's of Paducah. I have had bad results buying kits from individuals on ebay. Personally I prefer choosing my own fabrics unless it is something special.

quiltlady37 01-13-2011 10:05 AM

I suggest if you buy a kit to make it soon after buying it.
I have kits that were short fabric, but that line of fabric is no longer available. I haven't bought a kit from CT so don't know about them, but have had some kits that if you made one wrong cut, you would not have enough fabric.

PWinston 01-13-2011 10:11 AM

I love kits. Have purchased kits from LQS and Connecting Threads and been happy with all. I had sufficient fabric but don't know what would have happened if I had messed up in cutting or making a block. I like kits because the fabrics are coordinated and much better than I could put together myself.

psquared52 01-14-2011 03:46 AM

Kits appeal to me only as a source of inspiration. I find them visually interesting but have never bought one and don't think I ever will. I am a bargain shopper and the cost of a kit is usually far more than I want to spend (at least at one time). I love the creative aspect of choosing fabrics and using a kit would take that away from me.

Moon Holiday 01-14-2011 05:17 AM

I like quilt kits. I believe some of the simpler kit patterns are a great way for beginner quilters to get their feet wet. A big part of the anxiety beginners have is fabric selection, so this is a way to eliminate that first hurdle.

JudyVA 01-14-2011 05:20 AM

I have purchased kits and find them real boosters for feeling like I accomplished something quickly...especially the precut kits...I often will make these and give them away. I also will try them if this is a new technique or pattern style for me as a learning experience. I just need to finish them for my own sanity. The only thing I find is that often the yardage for the backing is estimated to be much more than I need and end up with lots of extra fabric which is ok for future projects, but adds costs to the original project.

deema 01-14-2011 05:23 AM

I've only ever bought kits just to get the fabrics in them, never to make the "advertised" quilt they're for, so I'm not much help. LOL I would think it would be bad business to sell kits without enough to finish the top - that would upset me. I don't like following patterns, though, so a kit would be limiting to me. The only reason I've bought a couple is because the fabric I was looking for was unavailable off the bolt, but it WAS in the kit, and I wanted it. LOL

pkelly1947 01-14-2011 05:29 AM

I love kits as I have trouble picking out fabrics that go together well. I've only had trouble with 1 quilt kits, I got too much of 1 fabric & not enough of another. I spent months searching for the correct fabric, as the store had run out by the time I made the top.

wb3efq 01-14-2011 06:18 AM

I have bought several from CT and have been very pleased. Ample fabric and the fabrics are really nice to work with. In fact I just cut one last weekend

Joan Gaddis 01-14-2011 06:57 AM

i have never bought a kit but i have bought fabric from wal-mart that was grouped for their" quilt of the month"
in fact i was cleaning my sewing room before i started my next project and i have 45 of them in tubs

jolo 01-14-2011 07:03 AM

I dont buy kits, I have found it was better for my budget if I just got the pattern, and bought my own fabric.

steelecg 01-14-2011 07:22 AM

I like quilt kits because I have what I need - The ones I have used have been good

Djohnson 01-14-2011 07:25 AM

I have bought kit from JoAnns and have loved them. I have never bee disappointed I. Any kit I've bought. Just watch the finished siE. Some are too amall

duckydo 01-14-2011 07:37 AM

Connecting Threads has really nice kits and the fabric is great. All you need is the fabric for backing. I have always been happy with connecting treads.

I only use quilt kits. (I spend days figuring out the fabric.)Sometimes I change the pattern around. I have bought numerous kits from Connecting Threads and Keepsake Quilting, and always have plenty of leftover fabric and love their fabric. Someday some lucky person will receive my scraps. I also love doing block of the months and the Patchwork Parties. Here is one completed and I do all my own quilting.

quilt3311 01-14-2011 07:50 AM

A friend of mine uses kits almost exclusively. She says she is not good at picking fabric. She has ordered from Connecting Thread and has been happy with the kit. Also gets kits from quilt show vendors and shops we go to.

catrancher 01-14-2011 08:21 AM

My opinion is that they are expensive. I've never purchased one.

dunster 01-14-2011 08:37 AM

I've never purchased a kit, because I prefer to select my own fabrics. (That wasn't always so - 4 years ago, fabric selection was my least favorite part of quilting.) The more you practice that part of quilt making, the better you will get at it, and the more you will enjoy it. However, if I decide to purchase a kit someday, I wouldn't hesitate to get it from CT. I don't think you pay a premium there for having the pieces cut into a kit, the prices are reasonable to start with, the fabrics are nice quality, and there is usually an opportunity to buy more of the same fabrics if you want a larger quilt. Actually, one reason I might buy a kit if it was for fabrics that I don't have in my stash, such as reproduction 30's or civil war.

BATIKQLTR 01-14-2011 09:08 AM

ATVRIDER........That is a beautiful quilt!!!

I also shop Keepsake quilting and love the look of their quilts and fabrics.

After reading everyone's posts, I think I will order one from either CT or Keepsake and give it a try.

Thanks for all the information!

cmsnurse 01-14-2011 09:08 AM

I bought a kit from my local quilt/fabric shop and don't even know the brand it was, but that is what has me hooked on quilting. The fabric patterns and panels just called to me. The top is finnished and I'm pouring over all the freemotion links I can find here to learn from. Haven't got a clue about threads and batting, but it did come with backing in the kit. Typically I sew and embroider. I have a brother 4000D, that's 4 years old. Just want it to look nice, so I think I'm going to do some in the hoop quilting squares and some book patterns and then try to free motion on them before I put the quilt together. YES I'm afraid of messing it up and so far it looks really great.

judykay 01-14-2011 10:11 AM

Connecting Threads has wonderful kits and I have always had fabric left over. They have great customer service also. Sometimes I also buy the kit for the fabric and the pattern is just a bonus if I use it or not.

misseva 01-14-2011 10:21 AM

I bought one BOM from Hancocks and I had material left over and I'm working on a BOM from Keepsake Quilting and it has lots of material left over. I did have to purchase the backing separately which was stated up front so no surprises there. I'm very pleased. I also suck at matching fabrics.

kwiltnutt 01-14-2011 11:21 AM

I don't usually buy kits as, Lord knows, I have enough fabric to make kits myself  .................that said, I just ordered CT Hooterville kit as I have 2 babies (not mine :-P ) on the way to make quilts for. The kit pic shows little owls and I couldn't resist.

Marilyn Woolley 01-14-2011 11:51 AM

My stash is adequate so I do not buy kits, Friends have had those that are pre cut. Seems the fabric is not top of the line and there is no allowance for errors. I am certain the Kits from CT, and Keepsake are better quality and provide enough fabric of good quality hopefully enough to cover cutting errors.

peabee 01-14-2011 01:20 PM

have only brought two. one had not enough fabric (from lqs!) to finish. the other (all batiks) got broken into for other projects! what i do like about kits is that i had fabrics that i probably would not have chosen, but loved.

I have done that several times from CT - especially when they have their kits on clearance or on their weekly sale.

sewingsuz 01-14-2011 02:29 PM

When you purchas a kit, is the fabric cut out for you?
