This is something I cannot remember from my childhood. I have never removed the basting until I was done, however, I am working on a quilt with my small (7") hoop and my safety pins used for basting are in the way. So I wonder how everyone else does this. This is a tied fun quilt, nothing fancy and not an heirloom!

I'd take them out as I needed.

As I quilt or tie I remove them.
|
If they are in the way remove them.

Me too and I love your avatar, Parrothead! Is that an antique quilt??? It looks like one.

Yes, it is a vintage quilt made by my grandmother and great-grandmother in the 20's or 30's. It is one of the few quilts we have from them that is all one color with a binding to match.

I always removed my pins when I quilted. If they were in the way off they went.

I remove them if they get in the way, or I am finished with the area.
