I'm wanting to make a disappearing 9 patch with a couple of charm packs. Where is the cheapest place to get charm packs? If I was to make a disappearing 9 patch for a couch size throw would two packs be enough if I put a solid color with it?
Thanks for your help.

Hi - You can get charm packs on eBay really cheap, and 2 would be plenty for that type of throw. They come in anything from 25 to 32 to 40 to 50 squares per pack, so be sure you check. I have gotten a lot of great charm packs on eBay, and have used them for exactly what you are asking about.

I just checked the quilt shop today and they didn't really have anything I was looking for....but they were 20 4" for $3.00. It sounds like ebay might be the way to go or fabric shops online. best of luck finding what you're looking for.

My favorite place to buy charm squares is the Fat Quarter Shop.

I don't know what these charms are, but you can buy them on the internet at quiltbus.
What are charms???? What do they look like??? could someone take a picture of one please?

Are they charms like we used to have for bracelets?

Fabric charms are 5" square cuts of fabric. Usually a company, such as Moda, will put out a set of these with 1 or 2 or 3 of each of the fabrics in a certain line. Most of them come in an almost perfect 5" square with pinked edges. They don't have to be re-cut for a lot of uses or you can make 1/2 square triangles with them.

whoo that's one long link but it does have a good picture. Charms are frequently traded among quilters who love the scrappy look to avoid paying for the yardage you will most likely not use. not that i ever buy fabric i'm not going to use LOL

This is where I buy some of them... go to the closeout section for pre cut closeouts. If I'm going to make a big quilt, you can get more bang for your buck here :):):) Last spring I bought the Moda anniversary charm pack sets in metal tins for a song. My niece and I are both the proud owner of a lot of them, and are planning to make matching quilts.

My mom had bought some sets many years ago -
and being a compulsive washer and dryer -
I was amazed at what happened to some of those squares.
Some (most) turned out fine -
A few shrunk 1/2 inch (really!!!!) one way
and a few turned into parallelograms (yes, I know a square is a specialized parallelogram, but these did not have 90 degree corners)
