Where can I locate large scaled prints in fat quarters?
 

My daughter and a friend want to make this quilt for 4-H this next year. She loves it- and the fact that I bought it from a board member will mean that theirs will be the only ones around. But my question is - it calls for 30 fat quarters for each quilt. As this is a reversible quilt.


It says Large scaled prints are show-cased. Does anyone know of any great places to buy fat quarters at a lower cost? They sell the fat quarters around here for $3.50+ a piece. That comes out to over $100 a quilt.

Has anyone made this quilt?

She wanted something that would be different than what can be bought around here.

I still have to post a picture of her last years quilts. She got Grand and Researve at the County Fair and a Blue at the State Fair in 4-H. I always want her to challenge herself.

I don't think I have ever seen large print fat quarters. At that price It might be cheeper to buy 1/2 yard pieces and let them share the yardage both using the same fabric but the way they use it would make the quilts look diffrent. I don't care for fat quarters, it seems I either squick by with just enough fabric, if I don't miscut anything, or the scraps are odd shapes and sit in a box for years before I will ever find a use for them. I would suggest haunting thrift stores, Goodwill and Salvation Army and garage sales for large scale print blouses or skirts and Men's hawiian shirts, etc. Rather than 30 FQ they could use maybe 15 fabrics repeated. They could come up with a very unique and beautiful quilt with the added fun of finding the fabrics, like a scavenger hunt. Additionally, they could easily cut up the left over fabrics into FQ and sell bundles at the fair. Make sure they match like fabric contents so their bundles are all cotton or notated if there is rayon, silk, polyester a blend or another fiber. At my fair the 4H always has a little gift shop area set up for selling items.

I would go thrift stores and see if you can get any aloha shirts. There's usually at least a yard of useable fabric. Make sure you look for the cotton, not rayon ones.
Also, since there are 2 girls making the quilts, look for sale fabrics and buy half yard pieces. You can also go to Fabric.Com They will sell a 1/2 yard of fabric from their non-clearance selections.

Look into buying Kaffe Fasset fat 1/4's , they sell them in bundles. Phil Jacobs is another choice and you can buy fat 1/4 collections . Fabric.com has some. Consider swaping with board members .. post in the classified or in search of section.

Are they going for a theme? Maybe some of us could send you a fat quarter? I am sure I could send you one or two and never miss it. But would like to have an idea of what they want in their quilt?

Second hand shops for dresses and shirts. Or purchase 30 long quarters and share with one of her friends. They may end up with same fabric but the order. Of putting together will give different. Quilts. Or how many girls together set in pairs to buy long quarter and then through all in the centre already cut into fat quarters and scramble for their 30. Girls would love this.

Kaffe Fasset has a lot of large scale prints that I think would appeal to young girls. But again with that many needed it will get expensive. Have you thought about using batiks? With the color variation in large scale on many batiks it would give you the look of different fabrics. I don't know what size the finished quilt will be but with the 30 FQs that's over 7 yards of fabric so unless it's going to be a very large quilt I would check the pattern to see how much of the FQ you actually use.
