I want to attempt spray basting a wall quilt. How do you do it without getting it all over the place?

I am curious also. I will watch the thread and learn along with you. Thanks for posting the question.

My livingroom floor. I keep the spray can close to the quilt. Then mop the floor when I done.
|
I spread out cardboard on my garage floor or on my basement floor.
|
I put two of those plastic craft tables together and have a garden shed that I do spray baste in.
|
I have a big empty wall. I tape my backing tight on the wall, and cover the borders around with brown paper or newspapers. I also cover the floor with newspapers. I spray baste over the backing, add the batting and spray again to add the top. I then pin, just in case. I find that since I am not working on my knees, I tend to add more pins and my quilt stays tight better and I get no bunching in the back.

I have a full size sheet that I keep just for that purpose. I always fold the sticky side in when I'm done with it. A little hard to unfold it the next time but sure saves making a mess.

I am lucky that DH is a pastor and we live really really close to the church and we have keys so we go over to the church, push a couple of tables together and do it there!
When I have to do a small quilt at home I put a few old sheets around the edges to catch the over spray. |
I was just at my friends home in WI and she hung her projects on the closeline to spray baste

I put down a shower curtain or drop cloth to catch the over spray :D:D:D

Yep-$3.00 shower liner at WM. |
My living room floor. With newspapers under it. I still mop the floor afterward. At least my floor gets mopped every time I finish a quilt top.

I've never done it, but since the spray is washable, the one I use anyway - why not tape your fabric to the back wall of a shower/tub enclosure and spray it there - should come off in the next shower or on cleaning day. Guess I'll have to try it.

I go to the Dollar Tree and buy plastic table cloths to put down. They're only a dollar each.
|
I've only done it a couple of times. I spray on my living room floor. I put sheets around my quilt and washed them afterwards.

You should do your spray basting outside because of the fumes, if this isn't possible be sure to have good ventilation. With a large plastic drop cloth for painting you can layer a large quilt top, batting and backing on it. Save the drop cloth for future use.

If I'm doing a small quilt, I use my kitchen table. I put down cardboard first. I angle the spray towards the quilt and spray in a grid pattern. I don't have any problem with overspray. Larger quilts I do on banquet tables at the community center where hubby works. I spray the same way. You don't need to spray too heavily, it holds pretty well.
