I can't understand why it is so important to flip the binding to the back side and sew by hand with the blind stitch? We have these nice machines and why not put the binding on back and flip to front and sew on machine. You could even use the blanket stictch. Before I start this binding today I would like to make a decision on this. Years ago when I made a few quilts and took a class at the college, we sewed it on by machine. Why not now? Thanks for input. Suzanne

I feel the same way. I don't hand stitch that well, and my machine is capable of many stitches. I did not spend a gazillion dollars on a machine only to have to finish something by hand. GO FOR IT!

I sew mine on by machine. I just don't have the patience for hand-sewing. I don't enjoy it at all.
I sew my binding to the front and flip it to the back. I use the glue basting method to hold it down then stitch in the ditch on the front. Works for me! :) |
All of my quilts have machine sewn binding. I use the blanket stitch or other decorative stitch to sew them onto the front.
I like the look, and my hands just cannot do the hand sewing :D:D:D |
for me it is a personal opinion. I do not like the look of it done on machine (probably because I am not good at it therefore the ONE quilt I did to looked crappy). Others don't mind the look or even LIKE the look! I don't, thats why I take the time (although I hate doing it) to finish my quilts with a hand stitched binding! I have seen BEAUTIFUL QUILTS, turned them over and they had machine stitched binding, I didn't love the quilt any less!

I really prefer to hand stitch the binding. Don't know why but I do. I guess it is a little more of me sewn in the quilt.

My Aunt, whom has quilted for years, gave this answer...hand sew to back when heirloom or decorative, machine from front when you want it sturdy. Make sense?

Well, to each his own! :D As for me, I do my binding by machine on front then flip to hand stitch down on the back. I just like the look of this better. But I love that there are different ways to suit different quilters. As long as we do what makes us happy, it's all good! :-D :-D

I like doing the hand binding, it is the final act for me in making a quilt. I prefer the look. I have tried to machine sew the binding on but don't like the look, sometimes even get the puckers but again, that is my fault, too. When I take the time to cut, piece, square and quilt a quilt, the binding is my last hands on labor of love. Everyone has there own way of doing thing. I just prefer to hand stitch mine to the back.
