If you are pressing quilt blocks you want a hard surface not a soft one. The fabric will sink into the pad and cause distortion. Sure not much but enough to make a big difference when the blocks are put together. A solid wood board with a thin layer of cotton batting and a heavy cotton fabric like canvas over that. It was easy to make a 16" square one and keep it on my ironing board. DH made me a big board which I love and I found the Steady Betty and I'm in ironing heaven. LOL.

I like this one. MUCH better than the one I found a while back. Thanks.

I have wanted a supersized ironing board for years, Last month, my DH came up with the solution. My large (plastic) folding table now has an ironing board cover I can put on it as needed. This is also the table I use for pin basting, so I did not want aything permanently attached. I took an oldish twin sized mattress pad, cut off the cheese clothy side panels and quilted it to a piece of garage sale uphostery canvas. I cut and finished the corners, then sewed all 4 sides with pockets to run cord through for fastening. It is not beautiful, but it is done and very useful.
