wooden quilt hangers--leave it raw, or finish it?

My husband is going to make a simple quilt hanger for his wall-hanging, Sunrise Over the Pines. He's going to use pine.... and asked about finishing it or finishing it--which was best for the quilt. It will be the kind that tightens onto the quilt.

Anyone want to offer advice?

Wood has acids that are bad for fabrics. Put some kind of finish on it.

I have 2 quilt bar/racks that mount to the wall and pinch the quilt and both mine are clear finished over a stain. So I think it best if he could put a clear coat on it would be best for the fabric in the quilt.

But try and wait at least a month before putting a quilt on it. That's how long they say to wait before putting books on a newly finished bookshelf to ensure that they won't adhere to the finish.

Okay--thanks for the advice, ladies. We will poly and wait. I appreciate knowing what to do!

I would put a pad of batting between the quilt and the wood so the quilt will not come into contact with it.
peace
