I am entruley in need of a laugh today? I am in a delema on this dumb Quilt I have been working on. My head is in all the wrong upsetting mode of life because of this fustration. I am just needing a few laughs to know that I am not the only one in this world . Thank you.

You are far from alone. We all make mistakes or have learning lessons I should say.

deema 03-03-2011 11:43 AM

Just yesterday I was quilting away with my ipod on (daddy was playing with the kids, so I used my earphones) and didn't hear the change, but it felt different. What was the problem? The corner of my quilt folded back...and I quilted it to the back of my quilt with tight free motion loop-to-loops. What a pain to rip out! It's ok, you can laugh, I did. :)

What's going wrong with your quilt? Maybe we can help...

Piecing about 30 miles of strips together with no bobbin thread.... sigh.

I bought a quilt top by accident at an auction. I was bidding on something else so I thought.haha. Well I swallowed my pride and {in my head} said that the peson who started would be proud that I am hand quilting this to finish it. Now I notice it is falling apart from poor material and the 1/8 seams used to put the top together. It has no binding and 1/8 to the edges of the blocks. But I am to stubborn to say I quit so I am hand stich in a ditch block #6 of 24

kwhite 03-03-2011 12:03 PM

I have sewn my clothes to a quilt. Now I sew int he nude!!

linda701 03-03-2011 12:04 PM

Mistakes, all my quilt blocks match up evenly and everything comes out great. The only thing wrong is the person doing the quilting.

I cut the back of my quilt while snipping threads to remove it from the sewing machine. I had to put the label in a creative spot!

ok, that sure got a laugh out of me! :)

charmpacksplus 03-03-2011 01:08 PM

Worst mistake I've made.... so far....

I was making log cabin blocks (needed 49 blocks) and set the project aside for a couple of weeks after making about half of them. When I started back up I used some 1.5 inch strips instead of the 2 inch I started with. Noticed this mistake after all the blocks were finished. Not good! I guess I could use them to make two separate smaller quilts.

irishrose 03-03-2011 01:29 PM

I didn't figure out it takes more blocks to set on point than in rows. I was finished with the blocks and had no more fabric when I found out. My daughter's quilt is special because it has a big star in the center. She doesn't need to know it's because her mother wasn't too bright that day.

Buying fabric from ebay unless the manufacturer is mentioned. No more of that.

kat112000 03-03-2011 01:32 PM

Umm, at this point I can say LEARNING TO QUILT!! has been my mistake! LOL!! I have done everything stated above me, except, no way will I sew naked!!

thepolyparrot 03-03-2011 01:36 PM

I've done some of these things - sewing without bobbin thread - and of course I was chain-piecing. Quilting folds of the backing fabric into the quilt - yep, that too.

No quilting in the nude though - I don't need any of my junk to fall onto my sewing area!

The worst things I've done both resulted from forgetting to check the back of the quilt - both times, I had briefly worked on another project and changed the bobbin tension and it was way too tight when I put the bobbin back in for my quilts. Both times, I ended up with horrible quilting on the back.

It felt like I spent a week with the darn seam ripper on one of those. The last time I did it, it wasn't so bad, but unsewing is never a feel-good activity. There's just no satisfaction in it at all.

Thank you that is really good advise. I would not like to have to unsew.I have a hard enough time getting things done the first time.

What did you do? OR add some sashings as they say!!!

DeneK 03-03-2011 02:17 PM

One of my first quilts was supposed to be for a co-worker who was expecting a baby. I found the cutest cat pattern. Bought the fabric -- cut it all out -- started putting it together. Well it was before I learned how careful you must be when cutting and I didn't have a clue about 1/4" seams. I think the sloppily cut fabric is still languishing in a dark corner somewhere. Never did do a quilt for my friend. As a matter of fact, didn't do any more quilting for a number of years.

Good to know. I haven't tryed anything like that but have fallin in love with a few tablerunners that they say are on point. I am a good one for trying things out without using directions. I think it is in the genes. Your daughter is very lucky anyway.

kem77 03-03-2011 02:29 PM

That's why I started on it last winter and started back on it this winter. I even tought of cutting it in half to make it go faster. But then the weatherman was wrong again so I took a long walk. also a sinus pill that will make me take a nap!!!!

gal288 03-03-2011 02:39 PM

Not washing fabric because I. Couldn' t wait to get started,,, & sure enough it bled!

cmagee84 03-03-2011 02:43 PM

Sewing the wrong side to the right side, instead of right sides together.

Also, ripping out a mistake because it was in the wrong place, then sewing it wrong all over again! Not too funny at the time! :)

ptquilts 03-03-2011 03:01 PM

I have not yet done what I always fear, basting a quilt with the backing wrong side out.
I was ironing a Lone Star top once, not mine but I was going to quilt it. Steam iron decided to urp up some rusty water right on the unbleached muslin. I had to replace the whole big square. Haven't used steam on a light colored top since.

I had my frame set up in my utility room
I didn't have heat in there ,I was heating with a kerosene heater.
I got to noticing that the quilt was looking darker
I run my hand across it & it mas smutty
oh my was I worried
my heater had smoked & I didn't notice

oh was I ever worried
I took a clean cloth & wiped untl I got all off that I could
I never did tell that lady about it and I quilted a lot of quilts for her after that

I have done that many times especially when makjing bargellos and having to line up all the blocks and getting into a groove where it seems to be going so great only to have to do it again when I finally wake up and realize that I ran out of bobbin thread AGAIN! I have also done this numerous times on the same quilt!

Been there and done both of these too! I am thinking I make a lot of mistakes when quilting.

Scrap Happy 03-03-2011 07:16 PM

I've sewn pieces backwards including large borders, sewn without bobbin thread, cut pieces to small (but fortunately get extra fabric just in case), accidently had 2 small blocks together and sewn them to another block. Are you feeling less alone in this yet? :)

My sister gave me a quilt. I decided to wash it.
her mother in law made it. It was a christmas colors and the red ran. Then she wanted it back.

DogHouseMom 03-03-2011 08:47 PM

Using metallic thread to QUILT my first quilt in embroidery stitches. What a mess!!!

pookie ookie 03-03-2011 08:48 PM

Scissors accidentally cutting into a completed top. I've also done that to a shirt... or two. I'm blessed.

Ouch! Many years ago a cat we had ran across a top I had just placed on the floor and put claw marks on it. I appliqued (and am not good at applique) hearts on the claw marks.

My real mistake has been buying, buying way too many notions, rulers & patterns.I got to the point where I bought the same pattern more than once, because the 1st was stashed away.

PunkQuilter 03-04-2011 02:30 AM

The worst thing I ever did was waste 20 years cross-stitching before I found quilting-or it found me!
