I've been hearing about this more and more... the idea of paying someone to attach your binding for you. People pay to have their quilts machine quilted, so why not, right? And I know many a person who complains about doing binding.

So I'm toying with the idea of offering my services on that. I'm wondering if 1) that sounds like something you would ever be interested in, 2) how much would you pay? By the inch, flat fee, etc, 3) would you want to cut your own strips and then have someone machine and hand attach? Or you just give them quilt and uncut binding fabric and they do it all, 4) ummm... whatever other thoughts you have :?:

I enjoy doing binding and when I do a few quilts in a row, I get really fast at it (I did a queen size quilt in 5 hours). Plus extra $ would be really helpful right now.

I have sewn binding on for others, and sometimes they sew it on and I hand sew it to the back. Diffentely let folks know you are available for this service.

Sharon321 02-10-2010 07:41 PM

My friend that does this charges a penny an inch. Personally, I like to sew on binding. It is TV work.

burnsk 02-10-2010 07:43 PM

I have paid to have the binding done on several quilts. I cut it, folded and ironed it, and gave it to a gal to do. But for the life of me I can't remember what she charged. I do know it was by the inch but not how much per inch. It was well worth it for me and she did nice work. Her mom does my quilting for me. But now that I've retired that may change. I now have more time and less money instead of vice versa. Isn't that always the way?

Penny an inch seems pretty cheap. If it's a 60" square quilt, that's like $2.40. I want at least $10 for my time :-D

dglvr 02-10-2010 08:11 PM

Yeap :D :D :XD:

Maybe she charges a penny per square inch of the quilt, so a 6x60 would cost $36 ... that seems more likely.

I like to do binding too and have gotten paid for doing it too. I prefer to cut the fabric myself.

quilterjeri 02-10-2010 08:47 PM

I love to do bindings, and have done some for others (and gotten paid). Seems the prevalent charge is $0.04-5 per inch. I also prefer to cut the bindings myself.

LucyInTheSky 02-10-2010 09:52 PM

And how do you advertise your services? Just to friends/word of mouth? Actual ads? Craigslist?

skpkatydid 02-10-2010 10:02 PM

I like hand work. Don't think I would hire that done. Now if I had to do it by machine....I might hire someone to do that.

Barb_MO 02-10-2010 10:43 PM

My machine quilter does binding. I've only had her do one for me.
You could talk to quilters in your area and she if you could offer the service to her clients. Also advertising in a comunnity newspaper.

memathomas 02-10-2010 11:46 PM

there is a person in concordia Mo. that does the quilting and binding you can supply the backing and fabric if you want but she charges like 45.00 and lower by size.

watterstide 02-11-2010 04:04 AM

My friend and i trade jobs, she puts on my binding, and i do some cutting for her..She gets the binding all ready to go,pieced and folded and pressed. my hands don't work to well with hand sewing..so this set up works for me.
to pay for postage back and forth to someone, for putting the binding on,would be out of my price range..if she were local, i would do it. And if my friend doesn't have anything to be cut out, i pay her..20 or 25 bucks. she doesn't charge me, but thats what i give her anyways..so she can buy fabric too! ( i never make anything larger than a twin as a rule..she mostly does my baby quilts)

maryb119 02-11-2010 05:52 AM

I don't mind sewing on the binding. My mom is a long arm quilter and she has customers that ask her to stitch the binding for them. I am not sure what she charges to do it but when she was at her long arm dealer, they told her to charge $1.25 per foot. It does take time away from her quilting.

Pam B 02-11-2010 06:04 AM

I would happily pay someone to sew my bindings on! I am embarrassed to say but I have a Xmasy quilt on my bed right now...without a binding! I had it long-armed in Sept. and wanted to use it for the holiday season. Finally, on Xmas Eve I just went ahead and put it on the bed....w/o binding. Yikes! I have 2 other quilts waiting to be bound, as well.

thequilterslink 02-11-2010 06:59 AM

If there was someone close by, i would pay all the time to have them sew the binding on. i don't mind sewing to the back, but i hate the hand work, my hands cramp. For charity quilts i sew to back, bring to front and zig zag down. I hate bindings!! I would prefer to make the binding and iron in half myself tho.

mpspeedy 02-11-2010 07:03 AM

I used to charge my handquilting customers an additional $15 to do the binding. Most of the quilts I did were probably what is considered a regular double bed. I also charged them for the materials I used to bind, back and for the batting at my cost.

shaverg 02-11-2010 07:24 AM

Nope, just because I love hand sewing on the binding, piecing and sewing on the binding are my favorite parts of quilting.

Candace 02-11-2010 07:24 AM

No, I wouldn't pay for someone to do my binding...

LucyInTheSky 02-11-2010 07:44 AM

For those of you saying no, do you do your own quilting? Or pay a long arm?

My theory, and we'll see if I'm right, is that you do your own. I wouldn't pay someone else to quilt my projects, and I also wouldn't pay someone to do my binding. Don't have the $ and I like doing it myself. My friend who is a long arm quilter said she didn't want to pay anyone to do quilting for her, so she bought a long arm

Candace 02-11-2010 07:51 AM

Pretty much, I like doing it myself. I have stuck to smaller size quilts so I don't have to pay for a longarmer.

farscapegal 02-11-2010 07:57 AM

Putting binding on is therapeutic for me. I like doing all my work on my quilt. Makes it more mine.

A few months ago, in the back of some quilting magazine, I saw an ad for binding. This person was charging $.15 an inch for just the hand sewing and .30 for attaching the entire binding. That would be $36 or $70 for a 60" quilt and about $54 or $108 for a double size. Considering it takes me about 4 hours just to do the hand sewing on a double/queen, that figures out to about $13.50 per hour (unless you're a fast sewer) so I think that's about right. Not sure how many of us would pay that much for the convenience if we can do it ourselves, but if there's a market, I wouldn't mind doing it. I love to do the bindings because I can do them while I watch TV and multitask.

brushandthimble 02-11-2010 01:44 PM

I like to do mine while watching TV. I charge a flat $20.00, If you were closer I would love to do yours. I have to have something to do while watching TV with my DH.

quilterjeri 02-11-2010 02:35 PM

Mostly word of mouth. Haven't done any lately for others.

thequilteddove 02-11-2010 03:18 PM

I charge .30 to machine sew to front & hand sew to back. Granted I don't get a LOT of binding work, but a few ladies will pay *shrugs*. Myself, I would prefer to do my own binding :)

Daisygirl 02-11-2010 03:30 PM

I send all my quilts to a longarmer and she does my binding, I think she charges about 5 cents per inch. She does a great job, alot better than I do. I do my own binding on the smaller projects though.

Bottle Blonde 02-11-2010 06:41 PM

I do my own quilting and binding. My favorite part of making a quilt is the binding step. Putting on the binding is like framing a picture.

adriansmom 02-12-2010 11:31 PM

I like to do binding. I enjoy making it myself and it gives me something to do when I am at dialysis. Since I have tobe there for 4hrs, I can usually get a quilt done fairly easily. I have only sent 1 quilt out to a LAQ because it was too big for my machine. It was about twin size and I don't have the space to accomodate anything that big. I usually don't make anything bigger than crib size, so it usually isn't a big deal.

Maksi 02-13-2010 01:20 AM

I love to do the bindings myself. After some practicing its not difficult anymore. I learned it by watching movies on you tube. :) I prefer to cut the bindings myself. I love to do that because after it's done the quilt is finally finished all by myself.

eparys 02-13-2010 03:50 AM

I love to do the binding so I do my own. It gives me something to do in the evenings.

I would not pay that much to have it done.

Sewsweet 02-13-2010 05:12 AM

Take a look at this. It may help you. I also like to do the binding, but she has quilted some tops for me. This how she makes a liveing, and people go to her for what thay can not or don't like to do.
