Yard Sale Find - What to use it for?

1 Attachment(s)
Found this wire rack at a yard sale for $3.00. (Score!) Love it for my sewing room. Now ... how can I best put this to good use?

linda8450 11-17-2011 03:39 PM

Well, you're off to a good start....fabric! I never have enough surface to store stuff. This looks like a fab find. Where in bama are you? I am in Dothan. Linda

Iraxy 11-17-2011 03:41 PM

Looks like excellent place to store fabric to me.

frugalfabrics 11-17-2011 03:43 PM

you could hang them on the wall infront of your sewing table....will allow for storage close toyou but it won't take up space on your table.

AnnieF 11-17-2011 04:01 PM

If they were mine I would sort all of my bagged up UFO projects and put them in the wire so when I was in the mood to pull one out....they would just be in my line of sight.

I like this idea. Great place to store items that are put together already.

lalaland 11-17-2011 04:20 PM

Fabric, fabric and MORE fabric. Looks way too empty right now to me.

whyiquilt 11-17-2011 04:27 PM

I have several sets of these for fabric and yarn storage. May I suggest using cable ties to make sure that it stays together. Fabric can weigh alot and I had the set I put into a closet collapse after I had neatly folded and stored all my fabric. I had to pull all the fabric out and put it back together. The cable ties really work!

hperttula123 11-17-2011 04:37 PM

stuff it full of fabric!!!! Lol. That is a great deal on the wire rack. I like it alot.

momto5 11-17-2011 05:20 PM

Fabric, fabric and more fabric!

deemail 11-17-2011 05:21 PM

get some 'S' hooks and use like a peg board on the outside of the two sides...inside still available for fabric...

sewgull 11-17-2011 05:23 PM

I have a similar shelf in my sewing area. I placed a radio for MY listening, other shelves are projects waiting to be completed.

Sewfine 11-17-2011 05:24 PM

I have the same rack I also purchased at a yard sale. Mines is four shelves tall and three shelves wide. I have mines in the closet in my sewing room with fabric on it.

jmabby 11-17-2011 05:28 PM

Myself, I would lay it on its side and use it for fabric, paint a board the length of the rack width on its side and put my books on top along with some baskets with thread, rulers, and templates.

Magazine, book and pattern rack.
I'd not put fabric in it until I was sure it wasn't going to rust.

On second thought-----------how about some baskets to fill with the stuff you need to move around a lot, like sewing notions?

soccertxi 11-17-2011 05:53 PM

OH MY! I love these things! I have them under my cutting table in the sewing room and in the closet in the long arm room! ( I got a room everytime a kid moved out..but I'm done with rooms, not the last kid!) The ones in the sewing room have those plastic crates in them. I have strips in one, pulled projects in one, big pieces for backing. I even have a shelf on one for smaller containers. I have them in white and in colors from the kids area! Oh..and I have a couple cubes in the family room for my son's sports equipment!

Tartan 11-17-2011 05:54 PM

Deemail suggested S hooks. I would use those or metal shower hooks to hang my rulers on the outside. You could put your fabric on the boards cut to the bin size for storing your fabic. You could also run dowel through two squares on either side of a bin for storing ribbon reels? You could glue spools on the outside end of the dowels to keep them in place. You could also place it laying flat on the floor for magazine storage or along the shelf in a closet for fabric storage?

serenitybygrace 11-17-2011 06:06 PM

All great ideas. I even ordered replacement corner pieces for the wire squares I got with no connections. The company was easy to deal with and sent the replacement parts right away.

ging10ging 11-17-2011 06:08 PM

I think fabric because of the size of the cube maybe even kits if you buy them. Looks like a great find. Have fun filling it up. Sue

wildyard 11-17-2011 06:50 PM

Well since I use fleece for backing most of my quilts, I buy lots of rolled fleece remnants of 1-2 yards. This would make a perfect place to store rolls of fleece until they are needed for backing a quilt. :D

lfstamper 11-17-2011 07:24 PM

Hang things from the sides like tools, hoops, etc.

ssnare 11-17-2011 07:37 PM

I like it too!QUOTE=MoanaWahine;4691449]I like this idea. Great place to store items that are put together already.[/QUOTE]

nativetexan 11-17-2011 07:39 PM

I have my Australian Patchwork and quilting magazines in mine. well, one box/cube anyway. fabrics and stuff in the others.

KerryK 11-17-2011 07:44 PM

Y'all are absolutely the BEST! I just knew you would have some fabulous ideas, and you surely did not let me down! WONDERFUL ideas, just wonderful! And I thank you sooooooo much. I am going to implement as many of them as I can! Now I am wanting more of these things! Another yard sale, maybe??? (No such luck!) Blessings to all!

DebbE 11-17-2011 07:47 PM

Fabric, definitely. But the first thing I thought of was using something to hang quilting templates off the sides, too - or small rulers, hoops, etc. Great buy!

BarbaraSue 11-17-2011 07:51 PM

I would love to use it for batting and fiberfil that take up alot of space, but visible to know how much I have on hand.

Cable ties = great idea! I already had them fall apart bringing them in the house and had to restack them, so knew they came apart easily. I have some pretty little pastel-colored cable ties that will work great! Thanks!

leatheflea 11-18-2011 04:10 AM

I would have to make little fabric covered boxes to fit in each section, and then store notions and odds and ends in them, maybe patterns. Fabric might weigh to much for this type of storage space.

AprilG 11-18-2011 04:16 AM

I like the UFO idea. I have a smaller version of this. I use clean "freezer food" boxes. (i.e. corn dog boxes, pizza boxes, etc.) I wrap the boxes like Christmas presents (minus the ribbon & bow) and then label each one (in pencil so it can be reused) and store them in order of preferred completion. Right now there are 5 UFOs on the rack.

quiltinghere 11-18-2011 04:45 AM

Gotta love yard/garage sales for storage items! You're lucky (or are you) that they still happen November through April by you. They don't start up again till April around here due to old man winter.

It also looks like that can be placed horizontal too - so my suggestion it to put in on top of something like a cabinet or dresser.

post a picture of what you do with it.

gailinva 11-18-2011 04:46 AM

lots & lots of fabric!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dolphyngyrl 11-18-2011 05:09 AM

I would do books if you dont have a lot books would fit nicely in them

Drew 11-18-2011 05:12 AM

I, also, would use it to store "kits" either your own and purchased one.

Arleners 11-18-2011 06:02 AM

The inside just cries for fabric, but I would also get hooks and use the outer surface to hang rulers and other such notions. I have seen this type of display in stores.

Pieces2 11-18-2011 06:11 AM

Cute rack, especially for the price. I would use it for future projects I am collecting fabric for.
Easy to see what I have, what I need. Or for projects I am currently working on, easy to keep everything organized.
Be sure to keep it out of the sunlight, may need to put it in a closet.

KarenR 11-18-2011 06:11 AM

Fill it with fatquarters.

I also like this idea. I have my UFO's in tote's stored in my sewing closet or under my cutting/ironing table but after awhile I forget which UFO is in which tote. I'd store my UFO's in clear pastic baggies so in a glance I could find what I want. May in Jersey

sueisallaboutquilts 11-18-2011 06:24 AM

I like what you're doing with it- fabric!!! :D
Great find!!

jamsbuying 11-18-2011 07:00 AM

I see it FULL to overflowing with fabric!! Great find.

mshollysd 11-18-2011 08:52 AM

cool thing with those shelves, that if you want you can tear them apart, and make a different layout.....Love those things
