AS I WAS MAKING SEVERAL STRIP SETS, I WAS WONDERING HOW MANY OF YOU OUT THERE PIN YOUR FABRIC TOGETHER BEFORE SEWING WHEN PIECING? I DO RELIGIOUSLY. I GUESS I'M AFRAID IT WON'T TURN OUT RIGHT. I KNOW OTHERS WHO DON'T. DO I NEED TO NOT BE SO PICKY?

Yep, pin, pin, pin. Especially on borders. pin, pin, pin! I've had some quilts come in with extra inches (one quilt had an extra 4" on each border, think 'ruffles'). That's what happens sometimes when you DON'T pin.

Cathe 08-15-2009 07:23 PM

Sometimes I pin, to match things. Not always.

cutebuns 08-15-2009 07:24 PM

I know that some pin and a lot, me not so much, actually really not at all, not to hold my pieces anyway, I sometimes use them to mark the side I am to sew.

It is a personal thing, some have to, some don't, I wouldn't quilt if I had to pin. though I have sewn for more than 15 years, makes a difference in my style of quilting, do what you need to do to be comfortable, if you feel the need to pin, pin away. would my work be more acurate if I pinned, maybe, maybe not.

Deb watkins 08-15-2009 07:37 PM

I pin, especially when matching seams in the blocks. I always pin the borders, as mentioned, ruffles are not something we want!

mamabird3 08-15-2009 08:27 PM

I always pin when matching seems too. Rarely do I ever pin otherwise.

quiltluvr 08-15-2009 08:45 PM

Currently a pinner. Points/seams match---go figure!

Jim's Gem 08-15-2009 08:58 PM

Some things I always pin, some I don't. If it involves points or stars or connecting seams yes. So I am in middle ground

amma 08-15-2009 09:09 PM

I am a pinner and an Elemer's gluer

kluedesigns 08-15-2009 09:14 PM

i never pin anything. not when traditional piecing, not when paper piece, not when sewing curves - absolutely never, under any circumstance, will i pin fabric.

Pickles 08-15-2009 10:03 PM

I do pin boarders and I pin my backing on to Quilt also
it all depends on how it's fitting together on different task that I might be doing.

Bevanger 08-16-2009 03:55 AM

I do . I hate ripping it out. But so used to pinning from my garment days

ginnie6 08-16-2009 03:58 AM

I pin on borders, sashings, so far i ahve not pinned when putting small pieces together.....but it really just depends on the size of the piece.

mcdaniel023 08-16-2009 04:02 AM

I hate pinning. I pin if I have to match exactly and don't think I can finger pin (The first quilting teacher I had was Elenor Burns on TV). Sashings always give me problems so I do pin those. I clip the borders and glue binding.

marsye 08-16-2009 04:08 AM

I hate pins!

Minda 08-16-2009 04:25 AM

I rarely pin.

Pam in WV 08-16-2009 04:50 AM

If I do strip sets and they are not too long, I will lay them, right sides facing, on the ironing board, spray with a little starch and press. The strips say together pretty well and you can avoid pins. When I pin, I get puckers where the pins are.

bearpaw 08-16-2009 05:53 AM

I pin borders and at joined seams. I just feel more comfortable doing it that way.

Iluv2quilt 08-16-2009 06:34 AM

I only pin when I match seams and points.

Tippy 08-16-2009 08:03 AM

I hand piece and I pin.. I'm quite anal about things matching.

Boston1954 08-16-2009 09:35 AM

I hate pinning, but I do it for the accuracy. I guess I am getting used to it. Anyone who can have something turn out right without pinning is either very good or very lucky.

*QuilterWannabee* 08-16-2009 09:46 AM

This was interesting to read, Shelly, as I just came across a "ruffle" when sewing on my last row of the baby quilt I'm working on. I wondered how that happened. Thought I was going to have to rip the whole row but somehow I managed to smooth it out, but I thinking it could come back to haunt me, don't know. I had pinned, but maybe not enough?

Shelley 08-16-2009 10:04 AM

In the case of the picture I showed, she just took a length of fabric, sewed it on, then whacked it off. If you measure across the middle, cut, then sew, you won't end up with the waves. As your feed dogs grab the fabric, they can slide the lower fabric more than the top, if they are not held securely, as what happened here. This is how you get ruffles.

When you are making garments and want to ease in fabric, you put the larger under the smaller to ease it in.

MoMoSews 08-16-2009 10:56 AM

LOL...I agree. I guess I need to be more confident. I hate to rip anything out.

MoMoSews 08-16-2009 10:57 AM

Shelley..Thanks for the tip!

bstanbro 08-16-2009 11:01 AM

I pin to match seems and I pin for long seems, such as borders. For small piecing, I do not.

FancyFoot 08-16-2009 12:47 PM

I'm a pinner 90% of the time

MsSage 08-16-2009 01:01 PM

I use to pin EVERYTHING but no more LOL points didnt match you name it went wrong.
SO I am trying a jelly roll and we shall see what happens LOL

Skeat 08-16-2009 01:29 PM

depends on what I am sewing if I pin...:)So, I'd say 50/50:)Skeat

butterflyquilter 08-18-2009 04:43 AM

I pin 95% of the time. I have also taught my 11 year old daughter to pin. She has made 8 or 9 quilts already--started when she was 6.

dakotamaid 08-18-2009 05:02 AM

Depends on what I'm sewing and how long the seam is, etc. Unless I'm using a walking foot I pin for connections, over other seams and definitely for matching.

mytwopals 08-18-2009 07:03 AM

I try to pin as little as possible. But I do pin, when matching the seams on diamonds. Other than that, no pinning going on.

mrs. fitz 08-18-2009 08:39 AM

Question for AMMA - what do you use the Elmer's glue for?

crazicorn 08-20-2009 06:10 AM

I very rarely pin. The only time I do is when there is a matching or easing problem.

Bluphrog 08-20-2009 08:50 AM

When I began sewing garments, I pinned everything. After a 4 month stint in a sewing factory, I could sew plaid pants, matching patterns, without pins!

Basically, I pin if I think something needs to be precisely matched. If there are seams that butt together (like 4-patches, etc.), I don't pin. For borders, I fold the top and border into quarters and pin at those points, which gives me room to ease the fabric. If I'm putting sashing on a block, I don't pin, but if I'm putting sashing on a row of blocks, I treat it the same way I do the border -- fold it in quarters and pin. I don't pin when I'm chain piecing or when I'm putting sashing on individual blocks. And I always pin curves.

Darlene 08-20-2009 11:35 AM

I pin most of the time unless it is a really small piece I was just taught that way back in the caveman days. LOL

lady.quilter 08-20-2009 11:39 AM

I am a compulsive pinner. I have had people tell me I pin too much, but I always find that I am happier with the results. My corners line up, my points match and I find that I have fewer mistakes... It make take a bit more time, but I find that I have a lot less unsewing to do :)

butterflywing 08-20-2009 11:55 AM

am still pinning, but also glueing. moving over to glueing more and pinning less. it was hard to find that elmer's washable glue around here.

mjsylvstr 08-20-2009 03:03 PM

Absolutely.......rather pin ':D' now

than be sorry later '' .

THANKS EVERYONE! I THOUGHT MAYBE I WAS BEING TOO ANAL. (OOPS! CAN I SAY THAT?) I HATE IT WHEN MY BLOCK LINES AND POINTS DON'T KISS. SO I GUESS I'LL PIN AWAY UNTIL I'M MORE COMFORTABLE WITH MY ABILITIES.
