I have never used cotton batting before.
I have only done SITD. My free motion would fit in a teaspoon.
What I am trying to say is: Your quilt looks wonderful to me.
I actually don't want my quilts to crinkle, but prefer smooth like a
comforter.
I think we "police" ourselves, when we invision what something will
look like and then reality is a little bit different.
Your "giftee" is going to love that quilt

I love the final picture and I now have a new saying "Crinkly not wrinkly!" Thanks for posting and I like that it's done (I can empathize with that sentiment). I love doing kid quilts because kids are so uncritical!
