    Agree with dakotamaid - your quilt, you get to decide... - That said, usually with queen size i put the pattern on the "body" of the bed....and DO add a border at the top - only i make it fairly plain...it will be under the pillows so no point going to a lot of work. And i usually make matching pillow shams.

    That's the way I prefer to make bed quilts with only 3 drops. But,I always extend the field to drop also. Then I make pillow sham(s) for the top of the bed. I have used many stripes instead of one wide border before.

    If I am planning on using a quilt as a bedspread, I make pillow shams and don't put a top border. If I am planning on using it as a blanket under a bedspread, I put borders on all 4 sides.
