Default Question about cutting fabric

My question is this...and I hope that someone can answer it for me. I think I already know the answer.

If I need peices that are 6 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches....The peices that I have are 6 inches square.
And I really want to use the 6 inch square peices....do I cut the OTHER fabrics 1/2 inch square smaller?

I think I need to...but I want to make sure BEFORE I cut the fabric. Thanks for everyones response.

Can you post a picture of the pattern. The other pieces can vary depending on how many there are, etc.

I would think they would all need to be the same size.

I would use paper to cut out the sizes to make sure before I cut the fabric. You are smart to question first!

What is the finished size of your block? That will decide any adjustment you need to make.

If you are making a block where you have triangles, rectanges, etc in it, I would suggest that you graph the whole pattern out on paper, using the 6" blocks (which would make the finished size 5.5" in the graph). Then, look at the size of each one, and add your 1/2" seam allowance. On triangles, this is a little tricky I think. I don't use the specialty ruler, and add 7/8" to my finished size. That's why I'm not sure that you would cut them all 1/2" shorter. I would graph to make sure. Hope this helps.

Could you make a sample block of some scrap fabric to test out your theory? I've done that before when I didn't want to waste any. You can always make a potholder or something. Let us know how it goes.

I draw it out on graph paper first. Then cut pieces out for a pattern. Then I do a sample block out of scrap fabric. I can then make any adjustments I need before cutting my fabric. I design my own patterns all the time and this works for me. I hope this helps.

it would all depend on the number of pieces in each block

It would make your life a lot easier if you used the pattern piece sizes recommended by the pattern.

Why do you want to use 6x6 pieces instead of 6.5x6.5 pieces?
