We used it in class. I don't reall what weight it is. 50 weight is a good quality thread and if your machine likes it (some machines are persnickety) and you get a good price - go for it. I usually use the same thread (Connecting Thread) for piecing and quilting - just a color difference for my preference. If the thread is thicker than 50 weight I would not use it for piecing.

I like Gutterman a lot. It's a nice long staple cotton, very little lint. Currently I use it mostly in the bobbin, but I've used it in both with great results. I use it to quilt as well.

I use Gutterman on the top and bottom. It has always worked very well for me.

Are you sure that it says 'machine quilting' on the reel? It is my understanding that the Gutterman quilting thread is for hand quilting only and will interfere with the tension discs on your machine by leaving a residue on them. Mettler quilting thread is OK to use in the machine but other brands put a coating on their quilting thread to make it easier to pull through the material by hand. If you are going to sew by machine it is better to use 40 or 50 weight cotton (of your favourite brand) that is not specified as quilting cotton. My preferences are King Tut. Aurifil. Mettler, Signature and plain Gutterman. Hope you have success with your project.
