Default Question about widths of final border.

I'm doing an Irish Chain and was wondering about borders. I've already done a narrow (1 in. finished) border and want to do a final border. [Sorry I can't do pictures.] Was wondering what proportion should I use? Don't want it too wide, but just baffled as to the width. I think 2 1/2" looks OK, and so does 3". Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any input.

if you feel that either looks fine, then make your choice on the finished size of the quilt that you desire to have.

Personally, I prefer 3" because it gives you room to quilt on top of it with special designs. It also looks great just stitching in the ditch when doing your actual quilting.

    That's just my two cents.

I think 3" would be a great border.

I'd also go with the 3" border, it looks great with a 1"inner border.

And if you only want the one inch that you've done, you can stop at that!

    It's really your choice.

Consider how you would like to quilt it ... that may make your decision re the final (if any) border!

Are you making the quilt for a bed? How many more inches do you need to make the quilt the size needed to adequately cover the bed you're making it for? I'm a long arm quilter, so I would make the border several inches wide to show off a beautiful quilting pattern, but that's just me.

It might looks nice if the final border is the same size of the squares in the Irish Chain?

I agree using a dimension that is used in the quilt , really gives it a finished appearance, and not just an add on to make it larger.
