The best thread to do embroidery with is embroidery thread, Other thread can be used but there is more lint and sometimes you have to adjust the tension. I am not in my sewing room so I can't check the weight of my favorite brand.

I tried Rayon thread due to the great number of colors available (and the major availablitliy of it), but my machine does not like rayon. It would shred in the machine. I use polyester only. I have some Poly 40X and Coats and Clark trilobal polyester.
I think it depends on your machine. My advice: don't buy a TON of colors until you figure out what your machine likes. And, give yourself time to figure it out!
Happy sewing

I have a Janome 8000 I use Janome acryl 100% #50, or the Rayon 40 wt. by coats & clark, My machine isn't to fussy but does like the blue tip embroidery needles made for embroidery but I agree with buckyfan19 try a few with different needles sometimes think also what you are sewing on!

I mainly use Isacord, but have used Robison-Anton. I also use polyester for the most part.

Almost all embroidery thread is 40 wt. At least the 5 different brands I have are 40 wt.

You shouldn't have a shredding problem if you use an embroidery needle either 75/11 or 80/12. The correct needle is the key to successful embroidery. I love Sulky 40 wt., also Robison Anton is good, or Madeira.
