Oh gosh - it is so GREAT to see so many of you who do NOT use a hoop. AND ALL THIS TIME, I thought it was me. Those hoops just seem to get in my way. Thanks for this question--helped me out immensely.

I agree. I've loosened up my quilts in my hoops and have gotten better stitches since. I baste on extensions to the edges of the quilt so I can keep all of the quilt in the hoop and keep it consistent. I just use pieces from an old sheet to use as extension pieces.

I am so glad you asked this question. I have hand quilted 2 small projects and did not hoop those, too smallbut I really thought the quilting police would get me if I didn't hoop a large quilt. No, I really just didn't know if it would probably make a mess.

I have to add another OMG, I'm so glad to see so many not using hoops or frames. I'm not a handquilter, but after posting about my husband's grandma's maple Leaf quilt, I agree, it deserves hand quilting, so that's what I'm doing.

I also saw 'big stitch' mentioned, and think that's what I'm going to do

I hand stitch my quilt bindings by hand, thats about it.
I send my quilts to a LAQ that does custom quilting.
She does great work and I'm always pleased
when I pick up my quilts.
I received a hand quilted quilt, 80% finished(12 blocks are done)
The four borders need to be hand quilted. The borders are cut 13 inches wide, and the quilter was using a 10 inch hoop. (which I received)
My question to the hand quilters here is-
Is it absolutely necessary to use a hoop?
I feel I could make better stitches if I didn't use a hoop.
She has 4 rows of basting running the length of the border.
Can I add more basting stitches and hand quilt these borders
without using a hoop? Is it absolutely necessary to use a hoop?
Would be glad to receive any advice on this topic from experienced hand quilters. Thank you.
No you don't have to use a hoop if you are not comfortable with it. I don't and I don't have a problem with it.
